Cacti Cake
Who you pointing at?
Hey everyone! I just had to share about my latest baking adventure – making a super cute cacti cake! You know how much I adore succulents and houseplants, so I thought, 'Why not bring that desert charm to my dessert table?' It was such a fun project, and surprisingly, not as hard as it looks. First off, you need a good cake base. I went with a simple vanilla sponge, baked in a round pan. Once it cooled completely, I leveled it and gave it a crumb coat with plain buttercream. This really helps keep everything neat for the final decoration. Now for the fun part: the frosting! I made a big batch of classic American buttercream because it holds its shape really well for piping. I divided it into a few bowls. The main part got colored various shades of green – from a vibrant lime to a deeper, more muted cactus green. For the little flowers, I tinted small amounts pink, yellow, and orange. Decorating is where your creativity truly shines. I used different piping tips to create various cactus textures. A star tip (like a Wilton 1M or 21) is fantastic for those classic ribbed cacti, just pipe vertical lines up the sides. For a softer, more rounded cactus, a simple round tip (like a Wilton 12) works wonders. You can even use a small leaf tip for little spiky details. Don't be afraid to mix and match! I piped some tiny flowers on top of my cacti using a small star or round tip, adding little sprinkles for extra detail. To really sell the desert floor look, I crushed some chocolate cookies (Oreos without the cream work perfectly!) to create edible 'sand' around the base of the cake. It adds such a realistic touch and a nice textural contrast. You can even add some edible rocks or small candy pebbles if you're feeling extra fancy. The trick is to have fun with it and let your imagination bloom! When I finished, I honestly just stared at it for a while. It looked so unique and charming! My friend came over and immediately said, 'UR PRETTY!' – not to me, but to the cake itself! It was such a great compliment, and it made all the effort worth it. It’s amazing how a little bit of creativity in the kitchen can bring so much joy. For anyone thinking of trying this, my biggest tip is to practice your piping on parchment paper first. It helps you get a feel for the pressure and movement. Also, don't worry about perfection; rustic charm is totally part of the appeal with these cakes. Even if your first attempt isn't flawless, it'll still be delicious and incredibly cute. So, if you're looking for a unique dessert that's sure to get compliments and brighten any gathering, give a cacti cake a try! It's a delightful way to combine your love for baking and plants.
