Why "Selfies" didn't exist for GenX-ers as kids! 🤣

... Read moreYou know, it’s truly wild to think about, but my childhood photo albums are completely devoid of what we call ‘selfies’ today. There’s a real, tangible reason why selfies from the Gen-X era don't exist in the way younger generations understand them, and it’s not just about the word itself. When I was growing up, the very idea of a 'selfie' was almost unimaginable. We simply didn’t have the technology. Forget front-facing cameras on our phones – most of us didn’t even have mobile phones until well into adulthood! Taking a picture meant grabbing a physical camera, often a somewhat bulky point-and-shoot, or if you were lucky, an SLR that your parents carefully guarded. These weren't devices designed for quick, arm's-length self-portraits. Then came the film. Oh, the film! You’d buy a roll with 24 or 36 exposures, and each click of the shutter button felt incredibly precious. There was no instant review screen, no digital memory card to hold thousands of photos, and absolutely no deleting a bad shot. You’d snap a picture, sometimes holding your breath, hoping you framed it right, and then you’d wait. Days, sometimes even weeks, would pass before you could take that roll of film to the drugstore or a photo lab to get it developed. Imagine taking a hundred 'selfies' and then having to pay for every single one to be printed, sight unseen! It was an expensive, slow, and often suspenseful process. Photos back then were also a more communal and deliberate endeavor. Someone else usually took the picture – usually a parent, a friend, or an older sibling. If you wanted a group shot where everyone was included, you might ask a stranger, or if you were feeling incredibly ambitious, you’d set the camera on a timer and run into position. The focus wasn't on individual self-expression in the same curated way we see today. Our photos were about capturing moments, events, and groups. They weren't about finding our 'best angle' for an immediate public share; they were about preserving a memory for personal albums. The closest we got to anything resembling instant photography was a Polaroid camera. That felt like pure magic! Watching a faded image slowly appear on a glossy square was captivating, but even then, it was a far cry from the modern digital selfie. Then came disposable cameras, which offered a bit more freedom for spontaneous fun, especially at parties or on trips. But still, they carried the same ritual of development, the wait, and the cost. So, when I flip through old photo albums from my youth, it’s abundantly clear why selfies from the Gen-X era don't exist in the digital sense. It wasn’t a matter of cultural preference as much as it was a reflection of technological limitations and a fundamentally different photographic culture. Our memories are definitely there, captured in prints – often slightly blurry, sometimes with red-eye, but always authentic. They’re documented through the lens of a friend or a parent, preserving candid moments of bikes, backyard adventures, and awkward teenage phases, rather than perfectly posed self-shots. It truly makes me appreciate how profoundly photography has evolved and how each generation finds its own unique way of documenting life's fleeting moments.
