HOMEWORK TIPS

College, and school in general, is hard. One of the easiest ways to navigate through school is to stay organized and not overwhelm yourself. Having gone through college myself, I experimented with multiple different ways on staying organized and on top of assignments, and these are a few tips I have.

1. Write all major projects/paper due dates from your syllabus into your planner

2. Write everything in your planner, don’t just assume 4 hours after class that you’ll remember what homework you have

3. Create a weekly list of what is due that week, and separate by due date (I like have a list that I can physically cross off bc it’s so satisfying knocking something off of that list)

4. Organize by level of difficulty and/or importance

5. Do small, quick tasks or assignments first, it helps you feel more accomplished and motivated. It also helps with not worrying about the small little assignments when you are trying to work on big projects or papers that could be more time consuming

6. If a big assignment (like a project or paper) is due towards the end of the week, put it on the list of hw that needs to be done everyday leading up to that as the last item on the list so if you have time/motivation, you can get that done sooner and not stress as much closer to the due date

... Read moreWalking into college, I felt a mix of excitement and dread. The sheer volume of assignments and readings felt overwhelming. Like many of you, I initially tried to keep everything in my head, which quickly led to forgotten deadlines and late-night panic. That’s when I realized I needed a system—a dedicated 'homework notebook' or planner that would be my academic lifeline. My original tips covered getting tasks into your planner, but what about the satisfaction and long-term benefits of a finished homework notebook? One of the most satisfying feelings is seeing an assignment crossed off my list. It’s not just about marking it complete; it’s a visual representation of progress that fuels motivation. I learned to use my planner not just for upcoming tasks, but as a historical record. Once I finished homework, I wouldn't just cross it out; sometimes, I'd highlight it in a different color or add a quick note like 'submitted' or 'reviewed.' This helped me track what I'd actually done, especially useful when professors asked for confirmation or during end-of-semester reviews. Choosing the right 'homework notebook' made a huge difference. While some prefer digital, I found a physical planner, much like a Vera Bradley non-dated large spiral planner I once used, to be invaluable. The act of physically writing down 'major due dates' from my syllabus and then crossing them off felt more concrete. Non-dated planners offer flexibility, allowing you to start anytime and not waste pages during breaks. I also discovered the importance of dedicating specific sections for different courses, or even for 'small tasks' versus 'big projects.' For instance, when dealing with college textbooks, like my 'FINANC ACCO' book, I'd jot down not just reading assignments but also specific page numbers for problem sets or key concepts to review. This way, my 'write everything in your planner' rule extended beyond just homework to all academic responsibilities. Maintaining this system throughout the semester was key. I made it a habit to review my homework notebook every Sunday night, planning out the week ahead, and every evening, checking off what was completed. This consistent interaction turned my planner into more than just a list—it became a reflection of my academic journey. When exam season rolled around, my 'finished homework notebook' became a powerful study tool. By looking back at what I had completed, I could easily identify areas I might need to revisit or confirm topics that had been thoroughly covered. It gave me a clear overview of my progress and helped me create effective study schedules, ensuring I didn't miss anything important, whether it was a small quiz or a major paper due. This comprehensive approach to my planner truly got me through college, transforming what could have been a chaotic experience into a manageable and even enjoyable one.
