Make yourself a priority
I used to think being selfless meant always putting others first. My calendar was packed with commitments for friends, family, and work, leaving me running on fumes. I often wondered, 'When will it be my turn?' It hit me one day: if I don't make myself a priority, who will? This realization was a game-changer for my perspective on self-care and overall well-being. So, what does it truly mean to make yourself a priority? It's not about being selfish; it's about recognizing your own needs, energy, and well-being as fundamental. It means acknowledging that you simply can't pour from an empty cup. It's about self-respect and acknowledging your inherent value, understanding that your capacity to care for others is directly linked to how well you care for yourself. I realized that prioritizing myself wasn't a luxury, but a necessity. Here’s why it’s essential (and absolutely not selfish, as I once feared it was): Prevent Burnout: Constantly giving without replenishing leads to exhaustion, both mentally and physically. When I started to prioritize myself, I noticed a significant reduction in my stress levels. Better for Others: Paradoxically, when you're well-rested, happier, and more balanced, you can show up as your best self for those you care about. My relationships improved because I had more genuine energy to give. Improved Mental Health: Taking time for yourself reduces stress, anxiety, and significantly boosts self-esteem. It helps you reconnect with what truly brings you joy. Increased Productivity: A rested mind is a productive mind. When I started taking breaks and listening to my body, I found myself more focused and efficient. How I started prioritizing myself (and how you can too!): Start Small: Don't overhaul your life overnight. Begin with 15-30 minutes of dedicated "me time" daily. It could be reading a book, listening to music, or just enjoying a cup of tea in silence. Set Boundaries: This was one of the toughest steps for me! Learning to say 'no' without guilt is incredibly liberating. It might mean saying no to an extra task at work or a social invitation when you're already feeling overwhelmed. Remember, 'no' is a complete sentence. Schedule "Me Time": Treat it like any other important appointment. Whether it's a walk in nature, a relaxing bath, or pursuing a hobby – block it out in your calendar. This shows yourself that your well-being is non-negotiable. Listen to Your Body: Are you tired? Hungry? Stressed? Pay attention to these signals and respond with kindness. Hydrate, rest, and eat nourishing food rather than pushing through. Mindful Moments: Even 5 minutes of mindful breathing, stretching, or simply enjoying a delicious meal can reset your day and bring you back to the present moment. Delegate & Ask for Help: You don't have to do everything yourself. Lean on your support system – friends, family, or colleagues. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness; it's a sign of strength. Reflect & Journal: Understanding what truly recharges you is key. Journaling about your feelings and what activities make you feel good can provide valuable insights. I’ve found inspiration in quotes like “Self-care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an empty vessel,” which really resonated with me on my journey to truly make myself a priority. It’s a continuous journey, with ups and downs, but taking these steps has profoundly transformed my life. I feel more balanced, happier, and surprisingly, I have even more to give to others now. It all starts with that one crucial decision: to make yourself a priority.

I am personally learning to do this now
