HOW EMDR THERAPY WORKS

2/15 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my personal experience undergoing EMDR therapy, I can attest to its transformative effects in managing trauma. Often, traumatic events don't get fully processed by the brain, causing them to stay 'active' and trigger immediate, physical reactions when reminded of the past. EMDR therapy uses specific eye movements or taps to activate the brain's natural information-processing system, engaging both hemispheres simultaneously. This bilateral stimulation helps reduce overactivity in the amygdala—the brain's fear center—and promotes the development of adaptive beliefs. What fascinated me the most was how my memory of traumatic events shifted during the therapy sessions. Instead of experiencing the trauma as if it were happening in the present moment, I began to see it fully as something that happened in the past. This subtle but profound shift made the memories feel less overwhelming and allowed me to regain control over my nervous system response. Research supports these observations, showing EMDR’s effectiveness in decreasing nervous system reactivity and facilitating trauma healing. For anyone struggling with persistent trauma symptoms or flashbacks that feel immediate and physical, EMDR therapy offers a path to reprocessing memories so they no longer control your emotional state. Importantly, EMDR does not erase the memory but changes how it's stored and accessed in the brain, making it less distressing. If you’re curious about how EMDR can support healing, consider reaching out to a qualified EMDR therapist to learn more. The process may help interrupt the chronic activation of trauma in your brain and bring a sense of peace that many find life-changing.

I tell patients that therapy and medication can work hand in hand but serve different purposes. Therapy helps uncover patterns, build coping skills, and address root causes of distress. Medication, on the other hand, can stabilize symptoms like anxiety or depression to make therapy more effective.
