STU TIME : MSW EDITION

This Elective Understanding Trauma in Children is really challenging me and the way I see people is really teaching me to look at people with softer eyes. #msw #mswstudent #therapy

3/26 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience studying trauma in children, I’ve realized how profoundly complex and delicate these young lives can be. Trauma doesn’t just impact a child’s past; it fundamentally shapes how they relate to others and perceive safety and care. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is how children who have endured trauma can often appear distant, defensive, or even manipulative — behaviors that are really survival mechanisms developed to protect themselves in unsafe environments. Supporting traumatized children requires patience and a commitment to building trust slowly. Many of these kids have had negative experiences with adults meant to help them, making them hesitant to open up or accept care. I’ve found that adopting a trauma-informed approach—being mindful of my tone, language, and nonverbal cues—can make a significant difference. It’s about showing them consistently that they are safe, worthy of love, and that the therapeutic relationship is a space where they can regain control and start to heal. The therapeutic relationship acts as a foundation for emotional regulation for these children. When I engage with them, I try to listen deeply and validate their feelings, helping them feel seen and understood. That’s essential because many traumatized children struggle with emotional dysregulation and often feel overwhelmed by their experiences. This elective has taught me to look at people with softer eyes, to understand that challenging behaviors are often cries for help, and to appreciate the resilience these children carry. It has also highlighted the importance of social workers being trauma-informed and culturally sensitive to foster a supportive environment conducive to healing. I've learned that recovery is not linear; it's a process that requires empathy, respect, and unwavering support from those who care for these children. For anyone pursuing social work or therapy, embracing the complexities of trauma and the nuances in children’s expressions of pain is vital. This student journey has deepened my compassion and shaped how I approach helping vulnerable populations with awareness and kindness.
