Living in Nepal, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by people struggling with mental health issues. With a population of around 32 to 36 million, Nepal services only about 275 psychiatrists nationwide — a stark indicator of minimal mental health resources. Many individuals experience symptoms like anxiety, depression, headaches, and sleep disturbances but hesitate to seek help due to strong social stigma and mental health being considered taboo. The government’s allocation for mental health is also very limited, roughly 5 cents per person, making affordability and accessibility significant barriers. Many people end up attributing mental health problems to physical symptoms alone or simply endure without professional support. However, recent developments give hope. The increasing use of smartphones and apps, like those developed by Apple, is beginning to bridge the gap. People can now access certified psychologists and psychiatrists online, making mental health care more reachable, especially in remote areas. Vlogging and social media campaigns by Nepali creators are also raising awareness by sharing personal stories, breaking the stigma, and encouraging open conversations about mental health. Through my own experience and community engagement, I’ve seen that empowering individuals with information and easy access to certified care can substantially improve mental wellness. It’s crucial to keep advocating for better mental health services, educating families, and utilizing technology to support those in need across Nepal. Mental health is a conversation we must all be part of — only then can progress truly be made.
