When you're in period recovery, especially from something like hypothalamic amenorrhea, your body is working hard to heal and restore balance. Fueling it properly isn't just about eating enough; it's about eating the right things consistently, just like my 'FINAL NOTE' emphasized – food really isn't the enemy! Let's talk about some key nutrients that were a big focus for me. Iron is absolutely vital, especially if you've experienced blood loss or are recovering from a period of low energy. That's why you saw steak and sweet potato in my evening meal – steak is an amazing source of heme iron, which is easily absorbed by the body. So, yes, steak can definitely help with periods by replenishing iron stores and boosting energy! Other great iron sources include lentils, spinach, and fortified cereals. Pairing iron-rich foods with Vitamin C (like the blueberries in my egg and avocado sandwich, or even a squeeze of lemon) can further enhance absorption. Healthy fats are another non-negotiable for hormone health and overall recovery. The avocado in my breakfast sandwich, along with nuts, seeds, and olive oil, provides those essential fatty acids that support your endocrine system. Don't shy away from healthy fats; they're your friends for satiety and hormone balance! For sustained energy, complex carbohydrates are key. My banana French toast in the morning wasn't just a treat; bananas offer quick energy and potassium, while whole-grain bread provides fiber and sustained release. Sweet potatoes, brown rice (like in my shrimp and veggie fried rice), and other whole grains are fantastic for keeping your blood sugar stable and energy levels up throughout the day. And of course, protein! From the eggs in my sandwich to the shrimp in my fried rice, and especially the steak, protein is essential for cell repair, muscle maintenance, and keeping you feeling full. Even my afternoon protein bar was a conscious choice to ensure I was consistently fueling my body. It's about building and repairing, and protein is the building block. Don't forget about variety and micronutrients! The veggies in my shrimp and veggie fried rice, the fresh blueberries, and even the simple jicama with Tajin snack, all contribute a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Jicama, for instance, is hydrating and fiber-rich. These smaller additions add up to a powerhouse of nutrition. A mini 'meal plan' guideline for period recovery might look like this: Breakfast: A good mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs (e.g., eggs, avocado, whole-grain toast, or a hearty oatmeal with fruit and nuts).
