FACT CHECK: Lazy Girl Jobs ≠ Lazy Girls

for those who have never heard of lazy girl jobs before: hello it’s time to come out from under your rock 😅 – but also, lazy girl jobs r basically jobs that are seen as low-effort, low-stress, low-commitment… but generally still well-paying enough to get you by, i.e. A Lazy Girl Job. u go to work, do ur job, don’t get committed, go home, get paid.

ngl, the whole “hustle” culture has been super strong following the pandemic; and if u ask me, it almost feels like the concept of lazy girl jobs emerged solely to rebel against the whole grind mentality. needless to say, most ppl are quick to shape a negative narrative around it: ppl who “settle” for lazy girl jobs r unambitious, and lazy, and unmotivated, and entitled. (tbh i also find it a lil misogynistic cos i actually know of GUYS who have lazy girl jobs too??) after all, why wld anyone settle for less in life, right?

but r they really?

full disclaimer: i do not have a lazy girl job (i do not have ANY job loll) – but, i think we should slow down before stereotyping lazy girl jobs bcos it reinforces a v misguided assumption

about human beings that is dangerously untrue: and that is who we are can only be tied to what we do for a living.

------------------------------------------

personally if u ask me, not everyone wants their work to determine their identity. some of us get to pursue careers and paths in life that are truly emblematic of who we are, and that’s awesome – but those of us who r lucky to do so should prolly be a lil less relentless in projecting our own ideals on others. human beings r not monolithic as a species, and as hard as it might be to believe, there ARE ppl in this world who do not crave professional achievement – and no they do not want to monetize their hobbies either. but that doesn’t mean that they are ALL unmotivated underachievers who want nothing out of life. in fact, sometimes, i feel it’s precisely bcos they have extreme clarity over what they want and do not want that drew them to a lazy girl job in the first place. maybe they don’t want their passion/ideals to become something they have to rely on for a financial survival. or maybe they just don’t want the long hours and the burnout and emotional toll from a mental exhaustion, and they r willing to trade in an entire career ladder for that.

i.e. not everyone wants to hustle.

and we should be multi-dimensional enough to understand that– even if we might not necessarily agree with it.

of cos there is a good argument in the counterpoint that, if youre gonna spend so much time of your day, every day, for the rest of ur life doing something, then shouldn’t u at least like it or make it part of who u r?

well i think there is a lot more nuance to that bcos to say that wld be to assume:

• ppl in lazy girl jobs hate their jobs (they don’t.)

• if u like something, u HAVE to make it part of who u r (you don’t)

• anything you dedicate time to should be commodified and transformed into ur persona, *in mathematical proportion* to how much of ur day it takes up

some things are valuable precisely because they exist outside of that system. it’s like no parent (these days) want their ENTIRE identity to be shaped around “mother” or “father” – even tho im pretty sure it can be argued that they love their children and it’s the one thing that takes up most of their lives.

so in conclusion, if you ask me, are lazy girl jobs promoting a culture of laziness? i wld say, no. it’s promoting a culture where ppl can feel comfortable enough to decouple their self-worth frm what they do for a living – and in all honesty? i think that’s a choice worth celebrating. #RealTalk #SocialDiscussion #Adulting101 #AdultingWoes #MyLemon8Diary

... Read moreFor those curious about careers that align with the lazy girl job mindset, many are surprised to find positions like administrative assistants, customer service reps, or part-time remote roles fit this description well. These jobs typically offer flexibility, manageable stress levels, and decent pay, enabling people to focus on passions or personal goals outside work. What attracted me to explore lazy girl jobs was a desire for balance — I saw how traditional hustle culture often led to burnout and lost joy in what we do. Choosing a job that doesn't consume every waking hour allows room for hobbies, mental health, and family without the guilt of underachievement. Another key point is that lazy girl jobs push companies to rethink rigid workplace norms, spurring broader shifts like remote work and flexible hours. This not only benefits employees but can increase productivity by promoting well-being. However, it's important to note that a lazy girl job works best when paired with personal clarity and passion outside of work. It’s not an escape from responsibilities or ambitions but a deliberate choice to prioritize mental health and life fulfillment on one's own terms. Finally, if you’re exploring whether a lazy girl job suits you, consider your values, financial needs, and long-term goals. It’s a path that requires honest self-reflection, but for many, it represents freedom from societal pressure to constantly hustle — an empowering option worth serious consideration.

I've been a senior admin in an events company for over 10 years. Reach work 15mins earlier before 9 (ample time for coffee or breakfast) and head home 6pm sharp. Weekend off. Very happy with my job. I think its what most corporate girls would want.
