Enmeshment in your spouse's family 🎯

They’ll say you “broke their family.”

They’ll say you “took their son, their brother, away.”

But what really happened?

You set healthy boundaries in a family where none existed.

Enmeshment looks like love,

but it’s really control disguised as care.

And when you refuse to play along..

when you protect your marriage,

when you honor your own family unit..

they call it betrayal.

Here’s the truth:

You didn’t break their family.

You broke the cycle.

And cycles that thrive on control and guilt

will always call freedom the enemy.

Stay strong.

Healing looks like rebellion to those who benefit from dysfunction.

... Read moreWhen I first encountered the term 'enmeshment,' it was like a lightbulb moment. Suddenly, so many confusing dynamics in my own family, and especially with my partner's family, started to make sense. It’s more than just being close; it’s when boundaries blur so much that individual identities start to disappear. I used to think 'closeness wasn't connection, it was control,' and that's exactly what enmeshment feels like. From my experience, one of the clearest 'enmeshed meanings' is a family system where emotional dependence is so intense that members struggle to function independently. 'Every decision was made together,' not out of healthy collaboration, but out of an unspoken expectation that no one would act without consulting or gaining approval from the collective. This often creates a 'web, where love was conditional and individuality wasn't allowed.' If you dare to have a different opinion or desire, it's often met with guilt or even outright hostility. While my original post focused on enmeshment in a spouse's family, it's important to recognize that 'family enmeshment' can show up in many forms. You might see 'sibling enmeshment,' where adult siblings are so intertwined that their personal lives, relationships, and even careers are heavily influenced or dictated by each other. This isn't just about being supportive; it's when one person's happiness feels inextricably linked to another's choices, leading to immense pressure and resentment. Identifying a 'toxic duo' within an enmeshed system can also be crucial. This often involves two individuals whose identities are so fused that one cannot truly thrive without the other's constant input or validation. When you 'married in,' you might have thought you were gaining family, but instead, you found yourself in a situation where your new partner's autonomy was constantly challenged. These relationships can feel suffocating, making it incredibly difficult for healthy boundaries to take root. Any attempt to assert yourself or your new family unit is often 'treated like betrayal.' Breaking enmeshment is a courageous journey. It's truly about recognizing that 'You weren't breaking their family. You were breaking the cycle, the cycle where love was measured by how much of yourself you gave up.' It requires immense strength to stand firm when others accuse you of 'changing' their loved one or 'taking them away.' But I've learned that 'protecting your marriage, protecting your peace, and protecting your new family, is not destruction. It's healing.' It's about reclaiming your own identity and fostering genuine, healthy connections built on respect, not control. This process can be painful, but the freedom and authentic relationships you build are worth every challenging step.

A message from a mother-in-law….
When your kids get married, it is not about their spouse entering the family and conforming. It is about two adults building their own family. And I’m saying this as a mother-in-law. When my children got married, I had a choice to make. I could cling to control…or grow into my new role.
