Garland, the merciful Lord, produces the creatures of hell.
The garland is a powerful and merciful god. According to the legends of Thai and Lanka folk Buddhism, he used his power to go down to the underworld to produce the infernal creatures who were suffering from their karma.
When the garlands appeared, the flames and the fervour of hell subsided for a moment, and the animals of hell prostrated themselves, and told their brethren in the world to make merit, to devote charity to relief and liberation.
Then the garland brought the letter back to the world of men, exhorting people to remain steadfast in the precepts, to do good, to spare evil, and to hasten to make merit; for karma follows the doer in all lands.
The garland is therefore not only a narrative of hell but an illustration of the laws of karma, mercy, and the power of merit that can change fate...Amen.
