The Holy Pause
Do not say, "I will repay evil"; wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you. — Proverbs 20:22
"When the wound is fresh and the injustice is maddening, our human nature demands a swift, fiery response. We want to be judge, jury, and executioner, brewing up a reply that hurts as much as the offense. Our switch toggles over from "get mad" to "get even."
However, there is a divine invitation hidden in this proverb: the call to wait...
Waiting on the Lord is not passive surrender; it is active trust.
When we choose to lay down our sword, we are acknowledging that God’s justice is perfect, far surpassing our own limited, emotional vengeance. It is a terrifying, yet freeing, moment to let go and believe that He will fight for us.
Have you ever noticed that when we stop aiming for retribution, and pause to ask the Lord to intervene, the burning desire to repay evil turns into quiet indifference?
We care more about His divine will than being vindicated. We trade the exhausting weight of holding a grudge for the peaceful assurance of His protection.
Prayer
Lord, I confess my impulse to strike back when I am wronged. My heart wants revenge, but I know that vengeance is Yours, not mine. I pray for the strength to resist the urge to repay evil with evil. When I am hurt, remind me to wait on You. I trust that Your justice is perfect and that You will deliver me in Your time. Help me to forgive, and to find perfect peace in Your hands. In Jesus Name, Amen.
