Proverbs 30:7-9
“Two things I ask of you... Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you... or lest I be poor and steal...”
We live in a culture that screams, "More is better." Yet, the wisest financial advice in Scripture asks for the opposite: "just enough." This prayer from Agur is a plea for spiritual survival, acknowledging that both wealth and poverty are traps.
The Trap of Abundance: When our bank accounts are overflowing, it is dangerously easy to cultivate a heart that whispers, "I did this myself." Success breeds a subtle, arrogant self-sufficiency that denies our need for God.
The Trap of Lack: When we are in need, fear can dominate, leading to a "survival mentality" that tempts us to take matters into our own hands, dishonoring God’s name by implying He is not a faithful provider.
The goal is not luxurious comfort, but consecrated contentment. By seeking only our "daily bread," we keep our hearts tethered to the Provider, not the provision.
Heart Check: Am I relying on my salary more than my Savior?
Do I trust God’s provision, or do I turn to dishonest gain in times of stress?
Reflect: Do I pray as diligently when things are going well as I do when they are going wrong?
A Prayer for Contentment
Lord, keep me away from desires for dishonest gain. Give me neither the curse of extreme poverty nor the pride of excessive riches. Feed me only with what I need for this day. Keep my heart dependent on You, that I may neither deny You in my comfort nor dishonor You in my lack. May my life be a testimony of Your faithfulness, not my wealth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
