The Strategic Pause
The Strategic Pause
"When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went down to the stronghold." — 2 Samuel 5:17
Ever feel like you’re fighting a battle with a blunt axe? Let’s talk about 2 Samuel 5:17
The moment David was anointed king, the Philistines immediately showed up to crush him. He didn’t even have time to get comfortable.
But look at his reaction. He didn't panic. He didn't rely on his own military skill. Instead, he made a strategic retreat to the stronghold. He paused to secure his spiritual footing first.
It reminds me so much of Ecclesiastes 10:10: "If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed." David refused to swing a dull blade. He waited for God to sharpen his strategy.
Honestly, I look back at whole chapters of my own life—novels, even—written in the frantic script of my own impulsivity. I’ve launched businesses, made career moves, and jumped into conflicts without a plan, and worse, without a word from God. I completely exhausted myself fighting in my own strength because I didn't pause to pray.
I’m finally realizing that prayers can't be answered if we don't actually ask. Wisdom, knowledge, and discernment will always outsmart brute force, but it requires us to live intentionally.
When you seek the stronghold of prayer first, God gives the strategy. Because David paused, the Lord gave him a clear green light: “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” (2 Samuel 5:19).
Let’s lay it down today. If you need this reminder, pray this with me in the comments:
"Heavenly Father, thank You for being real and present in my chaos. Forgive me for the times my focus is blurred. Thank You for reminding me that true success is birthed in prayer. Every failure was worth it, because it brought me to the end of my self-reliance and into surrender to You. We lay every endeavor at Your feet today. May the victories won in our strongholds unlock generational blessings. In Jesus' name, Amen." 🙏
