I have made walking a consistent part of my daily routine for over 3 years. When I first started, I didn't think much of it but over time, walking has created many benefits that reach beyond just the physical. Here are 3 things that caused my glow up due to walking!
01. Mindfulness
Walking can be a very meditative experience. When you immerse yourself in the experience, you get a chance to pay attention to your surroundings and let your mind wander. I like to walk when I have a lot on my mind. It helps me clear out any issues or worries that I'm working out in my head and allows me to be present instead.
02. Routine Building
Over time, walking turned into something I craved doing every morning. It helped me build the habit and allowed more structure into my life. In turn, this made me more confident and sure of myself. Building this habit influenced me to build other habits that helped my glow up in life.
03. Patience
To be honest, I didn't enjoy walking when I first started. It felt like a boring activity, but after hearing so many positive benefits, I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. I used to begin my days in an anxious state of mind, but when I started walking, I learned to slow down. This taught me to present myself more gracefully and with patience.
... Read moreYou know, when I first started my walking journey, I was purely focused on the physical benefits. I thought it would just help me stay active. But what I discovered was a profound sense of peace and relaxation that went far beyond shedding a few calories. It truly became my daily dose of calm, and I want to share how you can tap into that 'after-walk' bliss too!
For me, experiencing true relaxation during and after a walk isn't just about putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about engaging with the experience. I’ve noticed that if I consciously practice mindful walking, the benefits multiply. Instead of just letting my mind race, I try to focus on my breath, the rhythm of my steps, and the sensations in my body as I move. I pay attention to the sounds around me – birds chirping, leaves rustling, distant city hum – and the sights, like the vibrant colors of flowers or the ever-changing sky. This simple act of grounding myself during the walk itself is often enough to "relax the body" and "reduce anxious thoughts," making the post-walk feeling even more profound. It's like a moving meditation that prepares your mind for a state of tranquility.
Another game-changer for me has been creating a small, intentional ritual after my walk. It's not just about ending the exercise; it's about transitioning from activity to sustained calm. As soon as I get back, I make sure to rehydrate with a big glass of water, maybe add some lemon or cucumber for an extra refreshing touch. Then, I spend 5-10 minutes doing some gentle stretches, focusing on my legs, hips, and shoulders. This really helps to "relax the body" even further, releasing any lingering tension. Sometimes, I’ll just sit quietly for a few minutes with a cup of herbal tea, perhaps jotting down a few thoughts in a small journal about what I noticed or felt during my walk. This short reflection time allows me to consolidate the mental clarity achieved during the walk, further "reducing anxious thoughts" and reinforcing that sense of peace.
This consistent practice has genuinely helped me "build habits" that support my overall well-being. It’s not just the walking habit itself, but the knock-on effect of feeling more capable, more centered. When you consistently show up for yourself in this way, it builds incredible self-trust and confidence. I used to struggle with daily stress, but now, a morning walk acts as a reset button, setting a positive tone for the entire day. It’s incredible how something so simple can have such a ripple effect on your emotional state, making you feel more equipped to handle life's challenges with grace and patience. This journey of making walking a staple has been a cornerstone of my "self-growth," proving that sometimes the simplest actions lead to the most profound transformations. So, if you're looking for that deep, lasting sense of relaxation, try not just walking, but truly experiencing your walk and cherishing those peaceful moments that follow.
