... Read moreAs a youth coach, I've seen so many eager kids want to run faster, but get stuck. It’s not always about just 'trying harder' or natural talent! Often, the biggest hurdle isn't effort, but a fundamental misunderstanding of what builds true speed and agility. This is the huge mistake keeping your kids from truly knowing how to run faster: a lack of targeted, foundational speed and form drills. Many parents and even some coaches overlook incorporating specific speed workouts that address the mechanics of sprinting, leading to frustration and plateaued progress. My personal experience has shown that focusing on a few key exercises can make a dramatic difference. For instance, the B-Skip is one of my absolute go-to drills. It’s phenomenal for developing proper running mechanics, emphasizing quick ground contact and a powerful leg drive at the hip. Imagine high knees followed by a precise leg extension and sweep back down. This drill teaches the body to cycle legs efficiently, which is absolutely crucial for any aspiring sprinter. It builds coordination and rhythm that translates directly to faster strides. For developing explosive power, vital for that initial burst and sustained speed, Tuck Jumps are invaluable. They build vertical power and quickness off the ground, increasing elasticity in the muscles and tendons. When combined with dynamic movements like Split Leg Bounds, we start training the body for powerful, exaggerated forward propulsion. These bounds mimic the forceful push-off needed in a sprint, improving both stride length and power. Don't forget the more stationary but equally beneficial Split Jumps to develop that explosive reactive strength! Beyond these, there are many other fantastic drills that contribute to overall speed. Drills like Kick Outs, Kick Backs, and Hip Kicks are excellent for improving leg turnover and ensuring the legs are cycling smoothly and powerfully. Even something as simple as Hot Feet to Sprint can awaken those fast-twitch muscles and improve quickness off the mark. For refining proper running form, practicing Uphill Form Walks or Upstair Form Walks helps reinforce good posture, knee drive, and arm action against gravity. The Claw Drill is exceptional for teaching proper foot strike, ensuring maximum power transfer with each step. And for overall athletic development that supports speed, integrating a Side Lunge improves hip mobility and lateral strength. These aren't just random exercises; they are specific components of a comprehensive program designed to build a complete athlete, helping them to dominate speed track events and feel more confident in any sport. Remember, consistency and proper form are paramount. Start small, focus on correct technique over sheer speed initially, and gradually increase intensity. Make it fun and celebrate every small improvement! Seeing a child's face light up when they shave seconds off their time or outrun a competitor is truly rewarding. These foundational drills are the secret sauce to unlocking their full running potential!
