CHEMIST BREAKS DOWN YUKA RATINGS

Also, just because I am not concerned with an ingredient does not mean everyone shouldn’t be. I encourage everyone to read the research that is done. I am also a beauty enthusiast and am deeply concerned with cosmetic regulations. Any corrections please leave in the comments

... Read moreAfter diving deep into Yuka ratings for so many products, I've noticed a common theme: ingredients we often see in our everyday lotions and creams, like Petrolatum or Phenoxyethanol, frequently get flagged. It can be confusing, right? Especially when a product you love, like the EOS lotion, gets a 'Poor' score. I wanted to share more of what I've learned about how Yuka arrives at these ratings and how we can better interpret them for our own skincare routines. First off, let's talk about Petrolatum, often found in products like Vaseline. The Yuka app often gives products with petrolatum low scores, and I've seen many people worry about their 'Vaseline Yuka score.' From my understanding, the concern isn't always with the petrolatum itself, but with its purity. As a petroleum derivative, crude petroleum can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are known carcinogens. Good news is, highly refined petrolatum, which is what's used in cosmetic products in many regions, including the EU, is required to be free of these toxic impurities (MOAH). However, Yuka often highlights the potential for accumulation of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) in the body, especially if there's a risk of ingestion. So, while it's generally considered safe for topical use in purified forms, Yuka's caution stems from a 'better safe than sorry' approach, particularly if you're using it on lips or areas where it might be ingested. It’s about being aware of the nuances behind 'cosmetics products petroleum derivatives' and not just seeing a red flag. Then there's Phenoxyethanol, a common preservative that often triggers the 'Phenoxyethanol Yuka' alert, sometimes even labeled as a potential 'endocrine disruptor.' It’s true that high concentrations of phenoxyethanol have shown adverse effects in studies, especially in animals. This is why regulatory bodies, like those in the EU, set strict concentration limits (usually up to 1%). The discussion around it being an endocrine disruptor is ongoing, and reputable scientific bodies continue to review the data. For me, it's about staying within those regulated limits. If a product uses it responsibly, and I don't personally experience irritation, I might feel comfortable. But Yuka, in its effort to empower consumers, tends to highlight any potential risk, even if it's at higher, unregulated concentrations or still under scientific debate. When a product like the EOS Vanilla Cashmere lotion gets a 'Poor' Yuka rating, it’s usually not just one ingredient. It’s often a combination of several 'moderate risk' ingredients that, when combined, push the overall score down. The app's algorithm looks at the cumulative risk. So, the 'EOS Yuka score' might be low because it contains petrolatum, phenoxyethanol, and fragrance – each flagged individually as a moderate risk by Yuka. This is how the 'Yuka rating system' often works; it's a sum of its parts, rather than a single deal-breaker. This brings me to a crucial point about the 'Yuka app product rating example' screens we see. They're fantastic for quick checks, but they don't replace personal research. For me, Yuka is a great starting point for discovery. If I see a low score, I then look into why it's low. Is it an ingredient I'm sensitive to? Or is it a widely debated ingredient where the science isn't conclusive? This is where understanding that 'associated risks limited' note on some ingredients comes in. You might also hear about 'EWG Certified' products and wonder how that compares to Yuka. While both aim for cleaner products, they have slightly different approaches. EWG's 'Skin Deep' database and certification criteria are very comprehensive, looking at a wider array of health and environmental concerns. Yuka focuses heavily on individual ingredient risk based on toxicology data. So, an 'EWG Certified' product often means it meets a very high standard across many categories, whereas a good Yuka score means its ingredients are generally considered low-risk by their database. They're complementary tools, in my opinion! Finally, regarding the question of 'why doesn’t Yuka rate products high in protein' or similar nutritional components, it really boils down to Yuka’s core mission: assessing potential health risks from synthetic chemicals, allergens, and known irritants in cosmetics. Proteins, like hydrolyzed collagen or silk amino acids, are generally not considered 'risky' in the same way chemical preservatives or petroleum derivatives are, especially when applied topically. Yuka's algorithm is designed to flag ingredients with documented concerns related to toxicity, carcinogenicity, endocrine disruption, or allergenicity, which typically aren't issues with most protein-based ingredients in skincare. So, while proteins are vital components in many fortifying or moisturizing products, they simply don't fall into the category of ingredients Yuka is primarily designed to scrutinize for adverse health effects.
