... Read moreOkay, so I just shared my honest opinion about lavender and eucalyptus – not my cup of tea scent-wise! But I know I’m probably in the minority on this one, especially with how popular these two plants are. So, I thought it would be cool to dive a little deeper into why these scents are everywhere and what makes them such staples for so many people, even if they're not for me.
Let’s start with lavender. Oh, lavender! It's practically synonymous with relaxation, right? Everyone talks about lavender essential oil for sleep, lavender sachets in drawers, and beautiful lavender fields. People love its sweet, floral, and slightly herbaceous aroma because it’s known for its calming properties. It’s often used in aromatherapy to reduce stress and anxiety, and a lot of folks swear by it for helping them drift off to sleep. For many, it evokes a sense of peace and tranquility, which is why you see it in so many bath products, candles, and even cleaning supplies. It's a classic for a reason, even if my nose disagrees!
Then there’s eucalyptus. This one has a totally different vibe – it’s much more invigorating and sharp, with that distinctive camphor-like scent. When I think of eucalyptus, I usually think of spas or cold remedies. It’s super popular in chest rubs, diffusers, and steam rooms because it’s believed to help clear congested airways and provide a refreshing sensation. People often use it to feel more awake and focused, or to breathe easier when they’re feeling under the weather. It’s got that strong, clean, almost medicinal aroma that some find incredibly uplifting and purifying.
Now, while I find both a bit too intense (and as I mentioned, lavender sometimes triggers my allergies!), it’s totally understandable why they’re so beloved globally. Perhaps the intensity is part of their appeal for some, offering a potent experience that truly cuts through. However, just like my experience with lavender causing allergies, some individuals find eucalyptus to be too strong or even irritating, especially when used in high concentrations or applied directly to sensitive skin. It’s a good reminder that while natural, these powerful plant extracts aren't universally tolerated.
For those of us who find these specific scents a bit much, there are so many other wonderful natural aromas out there! Think about the fresh, earthy scent of pine, the bright zest of citrus, or the comforting warmth of vanilla. Every nose is different, and that’s perfectly fine. But it also makes me wonder, if you’re like me and these aren’t your go-to scents, what are your favorites for relaxation or invigoration? Are there other popular plant smells that you secretly can’t stand? It’s funny how our senses work, and what one person finds soothing, another might find overwhelming. Share your thoughts – I’d love to know if anyone else out there has an 'unpopular opinion' about a famous plant scent!
I love all plant smells but if it is to strong I will hate it
