2024 Paycheck Budget Breakdown

I’m a stay at home mom and I manage our family of four’s finances. We currently live in Germany thanks to my husband’s job and budgeting for us to achieve our travel and savings goals is a lot of work (trying to go debt free!).

Last slide is the complete breakdown of our paycheck and where we put things.

💰 We paid off our car last year which really let us put more money into combating our credit card debt

💰Housing and utilities is taken out of his pay automatically so I only put down what we see every month

💰 With all our back to back travel, our food budget has been all out of whack recently. Usually I meal plan for the week and buy groceries once. It saves a lot of money cooking at home and not going to the store every time I wanna make a meal

💰 The big goal for 2025 is to get back to our previous amount of 10k in savings and having a minimal spend year- maybe one family trip and cut all the way down on the unnecessary purchases.

InshaAllah this may give some budgeting ideas to anyone who needs it (scaled up or down based on income) and alhamdulillah for everything 🤲🏽💕

... Read moreWhen I first heard about the 'money buckets' concept, I thought it sounded overly complicated, but as a stay-at-home mom managing our family's finances in Germany, I quickly realized it's actually an incredibly intuitive and effective way to gain control. For me, 'money buckets' simply means categorizing our spending and savings into distinct areas, ensuring every euro has a purpose and helping us prioritize our financial goals, from tackling debt to building our travel fund. Here’s how I’ve adapted the money bucket system for our family of four, especially after realizing our savings were wiped out and we needed a clear path forward. It’s all about managing my husband’s paychecks strategically to ensure we’re spending wisely month to month: The Fixed Expenses Bucket: This is the easiest one. Housing, utilities, and health insurance are automatically deducted from his pay. What we see come in is already net of these, which simplifies things. However, I still account for other fixed monthly subscriptions (like streaming services or gym memberships) in this bucket to ensure we don’t overspend elsewhere. The Debt Attack Bucket: Our biggest goal currently is becoming debt-free. Last year, paying off our car was a huge win, freeing up more funds to aggressively tackle our credit card debt. This bucket gets a significant allocation from each paycheck. It's truly empowering to see that number shrink, pushing us closer to our goal of financial freedom. The Emergency Fund Bucket: After experiencing wiped-out savings (a tough lesson!), building a robust emergency fund is paramount. This bucket is essential to ensuring we always have enough money in case of an unexpected expense, like a sudden car repair or medical need. Even if it's a small amount each paycheck, consistently contributing to this bucket provides immense peace of mind. The Savings Goals Buckets: This is where the fun begins! We have a travel bucket (because exploring Europe is why we're here!), and a general savings bucket aimed at our big 2025 goal of reaching $10,000. These specific buckets help us visualize our progress and motivate us to cut back on unnecessary purchases. The OCR even mentioned listing important purchases – this helps us decide which savings goal is most pressing at any given time. The Variable Spending Bucket: This includes our food budget (which has been out of whack with all our travel!), groceries, personal care, and entertainment. This is the bucket that requires the most attention and wise spending. To manage our food budget better, I’ve committed to planning meals for the week and buying groceries once, just as the OCR suggested. This simple tip saves so much money compared to daily trips to the store or impulse buys. To ensure we're always on track, I find it incredibly helpful to revisit the budget quarterly, as the OCR also reminded me. Life changes, and so should your budget. Adjusting our 'money bucket' allocations helps us stay flexible while still prioritizing our overarching savings and debt goals. This systematic approach truly helps manage our money in a smart way, ensuring we spend wisely and achieve our family’s financial dreams.
