Life’s been rough

Life has been busy and chaotic, a reminder that things happen quickly and life is shorter than we often realize. It’s easy for it to slip through your fingers. My grandmother was hospitalized, and we spent a week visiting her for 4–6 hours or more each day. She’s now in an assisted living facility while she undergoes rehabilitation and learns to live with heart failure, along with several other health complications that will shorten her life. My great aunt flew down from Alaska to stay with us for the week, which has been really nice. My sister also stayed with me for a few days. Meanwhile, my dad had surgery and will be recovering until February. I often feel like my life isn’t my own anymore. I’m hoping to get back to creating content and doing what I love, while figuring out what this new routine and life look like as we adjust to these changes and redefine what normal means for now. #saratomer #sahm

And then, with my dad's surgery on top of that, it truly felt relentless. One of the biggest lessons I’m learning is the importance of acknowledging the overwhelm. It’s okay to not be okay. I used to feel guilty for being exhausted or sad, but I’ve realized that validating those feelings is the first step toward moving through them. It’s not about ignoring the pain, but rather sitting with it, understanding its source, and giving yourself permission to feel it without judgment. Another crucial strategy has been accepting help. Initially, I tried to do everything myself. But when my great aunt flew in and my sister stayed with me, it was a huge relief. Even small gestures, like someone bringing a meal or just listening without offering solutions, can make a world of difference. Don't be afraid to lean on your support system – family, friends, or even local community groups. They often want to help but don't know how. A simple "Can you pick up groceries?" or "I just need to vent" can open the door for them to contribute. I've also had to drastically lower my expectations for myself. Before, I aimed to be productive, create content, and keep a perfect home. Now, a good day might just mean everyone is fed, and I’ve managed to get a few hours of work done. It’s about focusing on the essentials and letting go of the rest, even temporarily. This isn't giving up; it's adapting. It's about preserving your energy for what truly matters and understanding that this intense period won't last forever. Self-care, even in tiny pockets, has become non-negotiable. It’s not about grand spa days, but simple things: a five-minute walk, listening to a favorite song, enjoying a cup of tea in silence. These small moments of reprieve are vital for recharging your emotional batteries. They remind you that you are still a person with needs, not just a caregiver or problem-solver. Lastly, I’m learning to be patient with the process of redefining 'normal.' There's no quick fix when significant life changes occur. It’s a messy, evolving journey. Some days are better than others. Some days, you feel like you've got a handle on things, and others, you feel like you're back at square one. Embracing this fluidity, and knowing that you're doing your best in incredibly challenging circumstances, is key. Remember, you're stronger than you think, and each day you navigate these waters, you're building incredible resilience.
