The practice of adultifying black children—treating them as more mature and less in need of protection—can lead to a lack of basic support when they are truly vulnerable. It’s crucial to combat this by consciously extending compassion and assistance. In addition, the girl’s confusion about using credit or debit cards points to a broader issue where children are sometimes pushed into handling financial matters before they are ready. This can be overwhelming and lead to stressful experiences that should be mitigated by adult intervention. Helping a child navigate these challenges not only supports their immediate needs but also teaches them that community is there to uplift them. Reflecting on this, I believe fostering a culture where we actively look out for one another—especially the youngest and most vulnerable—is essential. Watching bystanders record rather than aid was disappointing, showing a disconnect in humanity and responsibility.
