Growing up within a controlling environment like the Jehovah’s Witnesses can deeply impact your sense of self and the opportunities you believe are available. I can truly relate to the feeling of mourning the life you might have had, especially when so many normal adolescent experiences, such as pursuing athletics or college ambitions, are discouraged or outright forbidden. In my own journey, I remember dreaming of participating in track or swimming, just like the author who wished to be an Olympic swimmer. However, I was repeatedly told that extracurricular activities and socializing outside the faith would distract from religious duties or lead to negative influences. This isolation extends beyond activities to friendships, which are often labeled as “associates” and considered dangerous if outside the cult’s circle. One of the hardest aspects was grappling with my identity, including my sexuality, in an environment that forbade acknowledging or accepting LGBTQ+ experiences. Being questioned or suspected of being gay could lead to severe consequences, making it a painful, lonely struggle. Reflecting on this, it’s clear how much time and self-expression was stolen. Yet, leaving the faith and embracing who I truly am has been transformative. It is not just about escaping restrictions but learning to reclaim autonomy over my choices and passions. Pride months and supportive communities, such as those found under hashtags like #lesbiansoftiktok and #lgbtqiaplus, have been essential in healing and growth. If you are also recovering from a cult or repressive background, know that your feelings of lost time are valid, but they do not define your future. Embracing your identity fully and pursuing your dreams are powerful acts of liberation. Each step outside those constraints is a step toward building the life you truly deserve.
