Hormonal acne: my experience ❤️

Hai queens 💗 my first lemon8 post cause im so bored but also because i suddenly thought about my acne days 🥹

Growing up, I’ve never had any sorts of skin problem/ breakouts, but if I do it’s usually those that goes away within the same day (if that makes sense????) plus im someone who lovessss drowning my skin in skincare & random product recommendations from TikTok…and…that’s probably literally the reason why had my worst breakout ever when I was 17 (in my pfp year)

It honestly randomly started one day and as each day went by, it just became worse to worser 😭 & obviously as someone who had never experienced such things I was freaking out. I felt ugly, horrible, chopped & honestly everything you could’ve thought of. I no longer felt “pretty” even with makeup on & I did every single thing I could to “boost” my confidence, lashes, big eye contacts, drawing my eyebrows which was honestly the worst idea ever because it just made my acne stand out more 🥹💔

& as if that wasn’t bad enough I started going on TikTok/lemon8 to find even MORE PRODUCTS TO HELP CLEAR MY ACNE (Which I tried & it did not help, but it didn’t make it worse!! Just no diff ☹️)

turning point: deadass LOL

i honestly just got really tired of it one day (3-4months later) and decided to seek help from a dermatologist/ skin doctor @kinmunclinic. (My friend recommended me that clinic 💗💗) but tbh to even get to that decision it legit wasn’t easy because I was earning $10/hour from my then PT job & I know how expensive seeing a derm could be so I was really upset that I had to use my hard earned savings (meant to use for the future) for my skin!!! 🥹

But I’m really not gonna lie, it was the best (and most expensive) decision ever because I started seeing positive results within a month!!

Cost breakdown:

First visit : close to $450 (including consultation fee & products - travel sized ones that last you 2weeks only [not a choice 😭 doctor say it’s a must] because if it doesn’t work out on ur skin at least you don’t waste your money!!)

Second visit: 2 weeks later after I finish using it & had no allergy reactions I went back to buy all the full sized ones that was about another $300+ 💔 (but it lasted me about 4months!)

Third visit & until today: each visit would range from $150-$200 depending on which product I’m restocking on!! (Bigger size = more expensive but can last up till 6 months. E.g. 250ML facial wash can last me for 6 months because for their products a little bit goes a long wayyyy!!!)

ok now back to timeline, My acne took about 2months before it completely stopped and the scaring took about 8months to completely recover, but throughout this journey I obviously had to do some extra things/sacrifices to speed up the recovery processes which are

1. Drink a ton of water everyday!! (I aimed for 2.5-3L)

- it helps flush out all the nasties and toxins that were “stuck” in your body [if it makes sense]

2. Cut off all oily/fried food for about 6months straight

- as someone who loves potato corner, this was extremely tough but self control!!! Whenever I’m craving it I’ll eat chicken breast or just seasoned baked chips heheh!!

3. Eat more vegs

- call me stupid but I hate fruits and vegetables with a passion so this was extremely DIFFICULT FOR ME

- I’d get nauseous and want to puke each time I see fruits and vegetables but I had to man…I started easy with just spinach and broccoli 🥦!! (I was fine with those) but It took me awhile before I could eat/add cucumber & lettuce into my salads 😭 LOL I sound dumb as hell but each time I want to avoid it, I js tell myself that’s js slowing my recovery process & it honestly helps 🙏🙏 I didn’t consume fruits at all tho so to fruit haters yes vege alone helps!!

4. Consume your vitamin C!!!

- buy those vitc tabs and drop it in a cup of warm water everyday in the morning, make sure it’s the first cup of drink you finish before anything else 😚 it helps!! I promise you <3

5. LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT, BRAZIL NUTS!!

- Brazil nuts contains super high selenium content which is super great for your skin! 2 a day is enough, do not over eat it!! Can be purchased at scoop (I usually buy mine from WWP outlet )

But honestly at the end of the day, my biggest lesson learnt was that less is more, you don’t need a shit ton of makeup to feel pretty & please let your skin breathe!!

The photo of me in the black dress was me on my 17th birthday, I had zero makeup on but I still felt rly pretty that day because self confidence builds from the inside <3 I’m also so thankful that my friends/family & partner was super reassuring to me and they wld always tell me how pretty I was even with no makeup & my partner would kiss my forehead & cheeks (basically didn’t show me that my acne was disgusting HAHAHHA 💀💀💀💀)

Anyways all in all, if u girls are going through a super bad hormonal acne breakout at the moment just know that you’re not alone & it’ll recover one day!! ❤️

Love, shermsss

... Read moreFrom my experience with hormonal acne, I realized that managing this common skin condition involves more than just topical treatments. While the dermatologist-prescribed products played a significant role in clearing my skin, adopting sustainable lifestyle habits was equally critical. One key factor that helped speed up my recovery was maintaining proper hydration. Drinking 2.5 to 3 liters of water daily helped flush toxins and kept my skin clear and moisturized. Many people underestimate the importance of water intake for skin health, but it truly supports the body’s natural detoxification processes. Another important change I made was avoiding oily and fried foods. Although it was challenging to cut out favorite snacks, I found substituting these with lean proteins like chicken breast or healthier options like baked chips made a big difference. Processed and greasy foods can exacerbate inflammation, so minimizing them can reduce acne flare-ups. Incorporating more vegetables into my diet was tough, especially since I disliked fruits and veggies initially. Starting with milder options like spinach and broccoli made it more manageable. Vegetables are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that nourish the skin and help heal acne scars over time. Vitamin C supplementation was another personal hack. Taking vitamin C tablets dissolved in warm water every morning helped strengthen my skin’s barrier and promote collagen production. Collagen is essential for skin repair and reducing scar appearance. I also discovered the benefits of Brazil nuts, which contain high selenium levels. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that protects skin cells from damage and supports overall skin health. However, it's important to consume only 1-2 Brazil nuts daily to avoid selenium overdose. Beyond treatments and diet, my biggest lesson was embracing simplicity and self-love. Excessive makeup trying to hide acne often worsens skin condition and affects confidence. Learning to appreciate my natural skin and letting it breathe was empowering. Support from friends and loved ones played a vital role in boosting my self-esteem during tough times. If you're struggling with hormonal acne, know that recovery is possible with patience, proper care, and positive lifestyle changes. Each journey is unique, but combining dermatologist guidance with healthy habits can lead to clearer, radiant skin over time.
