(Eli Whitney, 1765-1825) (1765 - 1825) American inventor, engineer and manufacturer, famous for two important inventions which greatly influenced the economy and history of the United States.

- Cotton Gin Spinner:
Whitney invented this machine in 1793 (patented in 1794), which helped to separate cotton seeds from fiber more quickly and efficiently than manual labor; this invention enabled cotton cultivation in the Southern U.S. to become a hugely profitable major cash crop, and was one of the main inventions of the Industrial Revolution; instead, however, its success led to the expansion of slave labor in the South to grow cotton to keep up with the growing demand for processing, a factor that later led to the American Civil War.
- Interchangeable Parts System: Whitney later turned to contracting with the U.S. government to manufacture muskets and adopted the idea of producing exactly the same standard parts, making it easier and faster to assemble and repair products. This method of manufacturing is the cornerstone of mass production.
