questions to ask before getting married

my husband and i got married a little over three years ago and we’ve both learned a lot about just how much of a commitment marriage is in that time.

it's fun, it's a constant sleep over with your best friend, and it’s one of the best decisions i’ve ever made, but it’s also a legally binding contract that says your trust the other person with your life, your finances, and your future. so it’s not something you should jump into lightly.

ideally, you should talk through your boundaries, your future goals/plans, your finances, what you want your family to look like, what you want your relationship to look like etc, etc, etc…. asking questions is a great way to get these conversations going early on in your relationship.

my husband and i covered a lot of these topics before getting married, but i wish we had been more intentional about asking these questions directly. it would have saved us a lot of back in forth early on.

save these questions and ask your current or future partner:

- how will boundaries be set with in-laws?

- when, if ever, is divorce an option?

- where do you see yourself in 10 years?

- - where do you want to live?

- relationship non-negotiables?

- what counts as cheating?

- what boundaries will we have with friends of the opposite sex (or same sex)?

Creating an environment where both partners feel safe to express their thoughts on these pivotal subjects is vital for a harmonious marriage.
