How to draw a body

✏️This is the 'Five-heads body type'. I call it that because the height of the character is 5x the height of the head.

💗This is a cute, cartoony style.

💡A great way to draw the entire character in proportion is by dividing the page into five even sections first, and using that as a guide! I know that I tend to draw the lower body too small if I don't really focus on it!

✊ Make sure to draw the hands and feet larger than usual, so the character feels nicely weighted.

🐻 The heel to toe is about the same length as the chin to eyebrow, and the wrist to knuckle is similar as chin to nose.

💪When your arm is straight, your elbow comes to the waist/hip one and the fingertip is halfway down the thigh

📐 Always remember to measure when you draw!

... Read moreOnce you've got the hang of the 5-heads body type, the real fun begins – bringing your characters to life! I often get asked for 'drawing ideas body' and 'pretty drawings of people', and trust me, there's so much more you can do. My next step after drawing the basic proportions is to experiment with poses. Don't just draw standing figures! Try sketching your cartoon character sitting, running, or even mid-jump. Think about the flow of the body – a simple S-curve or C-curve can add so much dynamism to your '5 body parts drawing'. It’s a 'cool easy drawing idea' to start with simple stick figures in action poses, then build the 5-head proportion on top. For those wanting 'aesthetic drawing' or 'pretty drawings of people', remember that details really make a difference. After establishing the body, I love adding clothing. For example, if you're drawing a character like the one on the sketchbook page with black hair, wearing a white shirt, red top, and blue shorts, think about how those clothes drape over the form. Fabric folds can give a drawing so much life! And don't forget accessories – a simple headband or a tiny bag can add personality. If you're wondering 'how to draw a boy body' versus a girl, remember that in a cute, cartoony style, the differences can be subtle. Boys might have slightly broader shoulders or less pronounced hips, but the 5-heads proportion still works as a fantastic base. For 'little girl drawing easy' ideas, you can even play around with slightly shorter proportions, like a 4-heads body, to make them look younger and even cuter! This drawing tutorial is just the beginning of your journey to drawing expressive cartoon characters. Connecting the 'body and head drawing' seamlessly is key. After you've drawn your head, make sure the neck flows naturally into the shoulders. I find that practicing different head shapes and hairstyles (like various black hair styles!) really helps in making each character unique. Even for something like a 'school photo drawing', once you master these basic proportions, you can adapt them to create characters in different outfits and settings. The goal is to make your characters expressive and engaging, and mastering proportions is your first step to achieving that! Keep practicing on your sketchbook pages, and you'll see amazing improvement.
