Look for paper specifically designed for watercolor or mixed media, typically around 140lb (300gsm) or heavier. Brands like Canson XL or Strathmore come to mind. This will make a huge difference in how your colors lay down and blend, preventing that feeling of just pushing pigment around. Next, the drawing process itself! For an easy anime pencil sketch, I always start with light pencil lines for the basic shapes and pose. Think about the head, torso, and limbs as simple geometric forms. Then, I refine these into the elegant curves of an anime girl. The OCR mentioned "initial drawing phase" and "sketching," and that's exactly it! Don't be afraid to use a mechanical pencil for those precise initial lines. Once I'm happy with the pencil sketch, I move on to inking. Remember those "color swatches" from the OCR? Practice on a separate piece of paper to see how colors blend and dry! Finally, don't be afraid to experiment!
