Always trying a new art technique ✨

I'm not sure if I love this painting, but here's what I tried/learned while making it 🥰

I started by doing a greyscale version.

Notice that there are lots of different light tones but only one dark tone with high contrast. This is supposed to help with not muddying the shadows.

Then I applied a gradient map to the greyscale and used multiply and pin light blending modes. This was supposed to get the most variation of light shadow and color onto the canvas. In the future I need to not have so much saturation (red) in the shadows.

Then I finished it, and I've included a greyscale version of the final for comparison.

Obviously it is still very messy because idk how to render lolololol. I think I darkened the right eye too much.

Anyways that's my latest art ❤️

... Read moreIt's so relatable to dive into a new art technique and not be completely sure about the outcome, yet gain so much valuable insight along the way! Your journey with this digital painting, moving from a grayscale sketch to a vibrant colored version using gradient mapping, perfectly illustrates the experimental spirit that truly propels artists forward. I've been there countless times, trying to push my boundaries and often learning more from my 'mistakes' than my successes. One thing I've found incredibly helpful, especially when working on a complex piece like your beautiful painting of a woman with long hair and a red top, is to fully embrace the grayscale stage. It’s not just about getting the values right; it's a foundational step that takes the pressure off color decisions initially. When you establish strong light and dark tones in grayscale, you create a solid structure for your artwork. This helps avoid 'muddying the shadows,' a common pitfall many digital artists face. Focusing on pure value allows you to concentrate on form and light without the distraction of hue and saturation. Building up distinct light tones while maintaining a clear, singular dark tone for high contrast is a brilliant approach – it really makes a difference in the clarity of the final piece. When transitioning to color, especially with techniques like gradient maps and blending modes, it’s a whole new world of possibilities! Your observation about needing to dial back the saturation in the shadows is a classic learning curve. I've found that less is often more when it comes to color in shadow areas. Shadows tend to be desaturated and cooler, not just darker versions of the local color. Over-saturating shadows can make paintings look flat or artificial. Experimenting with cooler hues like blues, purples, or muted greens for shadows, rather than just darker reds, can add so much depth and realism. Blending modes like 'Multiply' are fantastic for deepening colors and shadows, but it's important to keep an eye on how they affect saturation, often requiring adjustments afterward. Addressing the challenge of rendering, which you bravely admitted is still a work in progress – you are definitely not alone! Rendering is arguably one of the most complex aspects of digital painting. It's about translating form, texture, and light into believable surfaces. For your piece, even in the final rendered painting of a woman, you can see the effort. My personal breakthrough came from really studying how light behaves on different materials and shapes. Think about how a sphere is rendered versus a cube; understanding these basic forms is key. Also, don't be afraid to use softer brushes for transitions and harder brushes for crisp edges where light hits strongly. For anatomical details, like getting that ribcage angle just right, using anatomical references or even a simple 3D model can be a game-changer. It takes the guesswork out of complex poses and allows you to focus on the subtleties of light and shadow. Ultimately, every artwork we create, whether it's a detailed portrait or a quick sketch, is a step in our progression of a digital painting journey. It’s about being open to learning, reflecting on what worked and what didn't, and applying those lessons to the next piece. Keep experimenting with those blending modes and gradient maps, and remember that every stroke, even the 'messy' ones, builds your skill. Your dedication to trying new techniques is truly inspiring!

the jar blew my mind 😯 like what! that's awesome. I don't usually create in full grayscale first. I think I might experiment with it again and see how it goes.
