One of the biggest game-changers for me has been understanding the flow of rendering digital art. After getting my initial greyscale values down – which, as I've learned, really helps to sharpen the form and establish depth – the transition to color can be tricky. I used to jump straight into vibrant hues, but now I often start with slightly saturated colors, knowing it's far easier to desaturate later than to try and add saturation where it's lacking. Playing with a color palette beforehand also saves a lot of headaches, ensuring all your chosen colors work harmoniously. When it comes to drawing specific features, especially for a female face drawing reference, I've found it incredibly helpful to establish the entire face first, even if I know bangs or a ponytail will cover parts of it later. This ensures the underlying structure is correct and makes adding details like long dark hair or a white shirt feel more natural. Don't be afraid to use multiple drawing references to get those angles right, but then make it your own!
