Trying a new painting style 💞

It's so exciting to experiment with new digital painting styles, isn't it? My recent paint-along experience really pushed me, and I'm still buzzing from what I learned. For anyone else on their art journey looking to expand their skills, especially with character art, I've got some extra tips based on my own process! Unlocking Different Digital Painting Styles for Characters One of the biggest questions I get is, 'How do I intentionally use different art styles for my characters?' It's all about observation and deconstruction! When you see a style you love – whether it's a vibrant cartoon, a detailed semi-realistic portrait, or a painterly illustration – try breaking it down. Look at the line work: Is it thick or thin? Clean or textured? Consider the color palette: Is it muted, bold, or pastel? How are shadows and highlights rendered? For example, the 'glowy skin' and 'blush' often seen in my work come from observing how light interacts with different skin tones in various styles. Analyze how the artist simplifies or exaggerates features like 'detailed eyes, nose, and mouth.' Then, try to replicate those specific elements in your own practice pieces. Don't be afraid to study a 'digital painting of a woman with dark hair and a striped shirt' you admire and see what makes her pop! Mastering the Clean Digital Sketch I totally relate to the struggle of trying to 'ACTUALLY sketch cleanly.' It's a game-changer for the whole painting process. My biggest tip? Layers! Start with a very rough sketch on one layer to get your 'basic head shape' and 'facial guidelines' down. Don't worry about perfection. Then, lower the opacity of that layer and create a new layer on top for your more refined sketch. This is where you can focus on getting those 'detailed eyes, nose, and mouth' just right. I find using a smaller, stable brush at this stage really helps achieve that 'clean line art sketch.' Remember, the goal isn't to be perfect, but to have a solid foundation so you're not constantly adjusting proportions once you get to the painting phase. It saves so much time and frustration! Cultivating Your Unique Digital Art Style After trying a new painting style like I did with the paint-along, the next step is to integrate those new techniques into your own unique voice. Don't just copy; adapt. Think about the elements you enjoyed – maybe it was a new way to render 'skin tones,' or how to add focal points like a 'kiwi slice,' 'white flowers,' or a 'green daisy' to enhance a character. Ask yourself: What did I learn that I can bring into my future work? Experiment with different brushes, color palettes, and rendering techniques. The 'art journey' is all about continuous learning and evolution. Practice consistently, push your boundaries, and slowly but surely, your distinctive 'digital painting style' will emerge. It's a wonderful feeling to see your art grow and change!
