This is why the face looks 3D in art 🌸

Artists do not need to learn the names of every muscle in the face, or every bone in the skull. Great artists like Reilly and Asaro have broken down the face into really clear structures that help your drawing look 3D!

The angles around the cheekbones are meant to break down into a clear front and side of the face.

Even in the hair, rather than drawing each strand, you may want to break it down into basic 3d forms. Thinking about what part of the hair is facing forwards, to the side, vs upwards.

This is study related to Angel Ganev's course. I will be working on lineart next!

... Read moreIt's truly amazing how understanding just a few core principles can transform your drawing. When I first started trying to draw faces, they always looked so flat, almost like paper cutouts. I'd try to meticulously draw every detail, but the life just wasn't there. Then, I discovered the concept of "planes of the face," and it was like a lightbulb went off! It wasn't about memorizing every muscle, but about seeing the face as a sculptural object, made up of simpler, geometric forms. This approach, popularized by masters like Reilly and Asaro, teaches you to break down the complex human head into basic, manageable structures. Think of the face not as a flat surface, but as a series of interconnected facets, much like a diamond or a carved block. For instance, the forehead isn't just a curve; it has a front plane, and then side planes that recede. The cheekbones, as mentioned in the original post, are crucial here – they provide those distinct angles that immediately suggest a front and side of the face, helping you achieve that crucial "3D face drawing" effect. When I’m sketching, I start by looking for these large, defining planes. The main mass of the head, the front plane of the face, and the side planes are my first landmarks. Then, I slowly refine. The nose, for example, can be visualized as a wedge or a series of planes coming off the main facial mass. The eye sockets create deep indentations, and understanding their spherical nature, even when simplified into planes, helps them sit correctly in the head. Even the mouth, which seems so organic, can be understood as a cylindrical form wrapped around the teeth, with distinct planes for the upper and lower lips. This structural understanding is key for any "facial structure drawing." One of the most impactful lessons I learned was how to apply this to "face shading reference." Once you've established those "planes Of the face," shading becomes intuitive. Light hits different planes at different angles, and by rendering these shifts in tone, you automatically create the illusion of form and depth. A plane facing the light will be bright, while a plane turning away will be darker. It's not about shading individual features in isolation, but about shading the planes that define them. This is where you really start "cleaning up additional planes" to create a convincing, three-dimensional form. And it doesn't stop at the skin! As the original post touched upon, even hair benefits immensely from this approach. Instead of drawing individual strands, I've found it far more effective to think of the hair as a large, volumetric mass with its own distinct "Even in the hair!" planes. Is a section of hair facing forward? Upward? To the side? By simplifying it into these bigger shapes, you give the hair weight and form, making it feel like it truly sits on the head rather than just floating around it. This is a game-changer for "3d sketch face" realism. While the fundamental planes are universal, I've also learned to observe nuances for "planes of the face female" or male faces. Female faces often have slightly softer transitions between planes, perhaps less pronounced cheekbones, or a more rounded chin structure, but the underlying principle of breaking down the form into planes remains the same. It's about subtle adjustments to the angles and curves of these established planes. My advice is to practice with diverse references; look for the "planes of a face" in everyone you see, even in casual observation. Don't be afraid to make a "mesy one haha" sketch at first; the goal is to understand the structure, and refinement comes with practice. This journey of understanding form has truly elevated my "drawing 3d faces" and I hope these insights help you on your own artistic path!
