Sewing is a failure 😭

Here is a sad story in four images about my project last week.

🙃 My history:

I took a sewing class in high school, but it has now been several years since having a machine. But I got this machine for Christmas and thought "Let's make a blazer, how hard can it be?"

🧩 You can see I cut out pattern pieces I found online. I think that was my first mistake. You can always make adjustments while sewing, but once fabric is cut off you can never get it back.

The pictures explain the rest of what happened. the back of the jacket was sticking out like a cape, so I took it in. Now it is uneven in the back of the jacket. I could detatch the outside and lining to shorten the whole thing... but it's such a short jacket already, I don't see the point.

Maybe a more confident type of girl would still wear this out in public, but not me.

I can't even say how many hours I spent. I was literally sooo depressed about it.

✴️ My future plan:

- No more clothes for me. I am going to make doll clothes for a while to see if I can learn pattern drafting without wasting so much fabric in the process.

- And learning pattern drafting means that I will always measure and adjust BEFORE tracing out pre-made pattern pieces. This has sworn me off of using patterns so much. maybe it can be a partial reference, but you have to adjust wayyyy earlier in the process than you'd think.

- but yeah, I will keep you updated on future sewing adventures, but there will be no human-sized clothing for a while more.

🗨️ Wins and fails?

What about you? do you sew? have you failed something recently?

It is hard to waste fabric, and very sad to spend so much time to not like the outcome, but I do believe that each setback is a necessary step to learning and improvement.

Share your stories failed projects and lessons learned if the comments if you have any!

... Read moreIt's so relatable to pour your heart and hours into a project, only for it not to turn out as you imagined. I've definitely been there with my own sewing fails, especially when I was tackling my first garment project after getting my sewing machine. It feels like a right of passage for anyone who loves crafting! One of the biggest lessons I learned early on, much like your experience with the blazer, is the crucial step of accurate pattern pieces and cutting out fabric. I remember trying to make a simple skirt, thinking I could eyeball some adjustments. Big mistake! I ended up with a wonky hem and a fit that was… let’s just say, 'unique.' It was frustrating, and I totally felt that same depression when all those hours seemed wasted. Now, I always take the time to create a muslin or practice piece, especially if it’s a new pattern or complex design. It's like a before after sewing project kind of deal, where the 'before' is a cheap fabric mock-up saving your good material from disaster. Choosing the right first sewing machine project is also key. A blazer, with its structure, lining, and specific fit requirements, is quite ambitious for a re-entry into sewing! My first successful garment was a pair of pajama pants. Simple, forgiving fabric, and straight seams – it built my confidence without the pressure of a public-facing garment. Then I moved onto a simple tote bag, practicing corners and topstitching. These small wins made a huge difference in my motivation. Another thing I've learned is to really understand your chosen fabric before you start. Some fabrics are slippery, some fray easily, and some, like denim or thick wool, require a different type of needle or even an overlock stitch for clean finishes. Knowing these details beforehand can prevent a lot of headaches during the cutting out fabric stage and beyond. It’s not just about getting the main fabric right, but also considering how the lining will behave with it. It sounds like your plan to move to doll clothes to practice pattern drafting is genius! It's a fantastic way to experiment without the high stakes of wasting expensive human-sized fabric. That focus on adjusting before tracing is absolutely spot on. It's all about understanding how a pattern translates to a 3D form, and doll clothes provide a perfect, low-pressure sandbox for that learning. Every setback truly is a step towards improvement. My early sewing fails taught me patience, the importance of reading instructions thoroughly, and that sometimes, walking away from a project for a bit to clear your head can be the best solution. Don't give up on human-sized clothing forever; maybe just start with something simpler next time! You've got this, and I'm excited to hear about your future sewing adventures!
