As a dog trainer, I use supervised tether sessions to teach my service dog in training “the art of doing nothing” just existing calmly around everyday life.
Right now we’re working on short, structured tethers to build neutrality and impulse control. As he progresses, we’ll be layering in a place mat so this transfers to solid place work too.
Calm and collected is a trained behavior. 😉
In dog training, especially when working with service dogs in training, mastering impulse control and calmness is essential. Using short and supervised tether sessions is a highly effective approach to teaching a dog the skill of simply existing calmly without reacting to distractions. This technique builds what trainers call "neutrality," where the dog remains composed and focused regardless of the surrounding environment. On day 3 of these 10-minute supervised sessions, the dog learns to stay tethered in a controlled, structured manner, which gradually helps in transferring the calm behavior to other exercises like 'place work,' where the dog remains on a designated mat. The place mat acts as a physical boundary reinforcing the calm behavior learned during tether sessions. The "art of doing nothing" might seem simple, but it requires dedication and consistency to shape this calm and collected demeanor as a trained behavior. This is particularly important for service dogs, who must remain unflappable and controlled to perform their duties effectively. Dog owners and trainers can benefit from incorporating these short, mindful tether sessions in their daily routine to improve impulse control, reduce anxiety, and build a stronger bond with their dog. Patience and positive reinforcement are key—rewarding the dog calmly while tethered helps reinforce the desired behavior. By gradually layering additional training components and maintaining a calm training environment, service dogs learn to generalize calmness across different settings and situations. This well-rounded approach contributes not only to a well-behaved service dog but to dogs that enrich the lives of their handlers through dependable and collected companionship.
