Some of y’all think sleep is cozy.
For me? It’s complicated.
Being type 1 diabetic means I’ve had nights where I’m scared to fall asleep because what if my sugar drops and I don’t wake up?
But also being epileptic means I live with the fear of SUDEP “sudden unexpected death in epilepsy”. It’s rare, but it’s real. And it usually happens during sleep. So yeah… imagine knowing sleep is crucial for your brain, for seizure control, for blood sugars… but also being low key terrified of it.
That’s the part people don’t see. The insomnia.The checking my Dexcom one more time.
The forcing myself to rest with meds while my brain is in fight or flight.
SUDEP isn’t talked about enough. It’s not meant to scare people it’s meant to educate. Managing seizures, taking meds consistently, getting enough sleep, and having monitoring systems in place lowers risk. Awareness matters. Support matters.

Moreover, communicating openly about these fears with family, friends, and healthcare providers creates a support network that is vital to coping with the emotional burden. It's important to recognize that while SUDEP is rare, awareness and education can empower those affected to take proactive steps. Joining epilepsy awareness groups and connecting with others who share similar experiences can provide comfort and valuable insights. Remember, you're not alone in this, and support matters.
