I recently dove into 'Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries' by Heather Fawcett, and I absolutely have to share my experience! As you might have guessed from my 4-star rating, I really enjoyed it. It’s been buzzing around the book community, and I finally picked it up, and I’m so glad I did. This book felt like a warm, cozy blanket with a mischievous fae twist, perfect for curling up with on a rainy afternoon. Now, let's talk about what made this book so enjoyable for me. First off, Emily Wilde herself is a character! I understand why some people might find Emily herself to be a bit off-putting initially. She’s an academic first and foremost, a brilliant but socially awkward scholar who prefers the company of books and fae to humans. But that’s precisely what made her so endearing to me. Her dedication to her work and her blunt honesty were hilariously charming. Watching her navigate social situations, or rather, avoid them, provided so many laugh-out-loud moments. And then there's the relationship dynamic. Oh, my goodness, their relationship was absolutely hysterical! The banter, the slow-burn, the unexpected tenderness – it all just worked so well. It wasn't your typical romance, which made it all the more refreshing and captivating. I found myself rooting for them from the start, despite Emily’s initial resistance to anything that might distract from her research. The fae lore woven throughout the story was also incredibly rich and imaginative, making the world feel vibrant and dangerous all at once. However, I do have to mention that the pacing was a little off for me, especially near the end. There were moments where the story felt like it dragged a tiny bit, and then other sections, particularly when being dragged to the castle, felt like a whole other book. It didn't deter my enjoyment significantly, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re big on consistent pacing. It’s why it didn't quite make it to a five-star read for me. Finally, for those wondering, 'Is Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries spicy?' I'd say no. It’s definitely a clean romance, focusing more on wit, emotional connection, and adventure rather than explicit scenes. If you're looking for a cozy fantasy read with a strong academic protagonist, charming fae, and a delightful, humorous romance, then you really will enjoy it. It’s a wonderful read for anyone who loves folklore, a touch of mystery, and characters you can’t help but adore, even with their quirks. I highly recommend picking it up!
