First book of 2026 and DNF at 55%. Got a little to

My Current Read

📖 Name of the Book: kiss of the basilisk

💭 My Thoughts: I ended up DNF because of part of the storyline. Wasn’t my jam. Up until there would give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Once a certain tradition among the basilisks was brought up and determined that the MFC was going to participate, my star rating went down and my ick factor went up.

1/5 Edited to

... Read moreSo, I recently had to make the tough decision to DNF 'Kiss of the Basilisk' by Lindsay Straube. It's always a bit disappointing when you start a book with high hopes, especially when you're 55% of the way through, but sometimes a book just isn't your cup of tea, or perhaps, it gets a little too weird for your taste, as I found with this one. For those unfamiliar, 'DNF' stands for 'Did Not Finish,' and it's a common practice in the reading community. It means putting a book down before reaching the end, and for many readers, it's a perfectly valid choice. We all want to love every book we pick up, but sometimes, a storyline takes a turn that just doesn't resonate. In my case with 'Kiss of the Basilisk,' I was genuinely enjoying it for the first half, probably giving it a solid three stars. The world-building and characters were engaging. However, a particular tradition involving the basilisks was introduced, and it immediately triggered my 'ick factor.' It was a moment where the plot went in a direction that I personally wasn't comfortable with, and I knew continuing would only make me resent the reading experience. It's that feeling when something in the narrative just doesn't sit right with your personal preferences or values, and you realize you can't keep going. It's important to remember that it's okay to DNF a book. Life is too short to force yourself through a story you're not enjoying, especially when there are countless other amazing books waiting to be discovered. Whether it's pacing issues, underdeveloped characters, or a plot twist that throws you off completely, recognizing when a book isn't working for you is a form of self-care for readers. Don't feel guilty about it! Sometimes, a book that's highly praised by others might not be the right fit for your unique reading taste, and that's perfectly fine. Lindsay Straube is an author with a distinct voice, and while 'Kiss of the Basilisk' didn't work for me personally beyond the midway point, it doesn't mean her other works wouldn't be fantastic for someone else. Every author explores different themes and styles, and one book's particular direction might just be a specific choice that doesn't align with every single reader's preference. It's always worth looking into an author's broader catalog if you appreciate elements of their writing, even if a single title doesn't fully click. Ultimately, my experience with 'Kiss of the Basilisk' highlights that personal taste plays a huge role in reading enjoyment. While the initial premise was captivating, I had to call it quits when it veered into territory that was 'too weird for my taste.' It was my first DNF of the year, but it taught me a valuable lesson: listen to your gut when reading. If a book gives you the 'ick' or just isn't holding your interest, it's perfectly acceptable to move on.
