People who think baptism in water is necessary for salvation have just a couple cherry picked verses as "proof" texts to support their minimization of Jesus' finished work. One of those is a direct quote from Christ. Here it is.

Matthew 28:19-20 NASB
"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus did in fact say that once people became disciples, they ought to be baptized, but there is no mention from our Lord that baptism saves in the verse above. Additionally, the verse isn't about salvation at all, because becoming a disciple, i.e. discipleship, isn't necessary before salvation either.

Nope! No mention of discipleship or baptism to receive eternal life there either.
If you believe baptism in water is necessary for salvation, then you don't fully believe in Jesus for your salvation.
• You actually think your salvation depends upon you.
• You think you must get to the water in order to be saved.
• You believe in mixing Jesus' finished work with your works.
• You believe in a different gospel and a different Jesus whose blood isn't sufficient.
Repent of your unbelief and place your trust fully in Christ alone.
From my personal journey of faith, I have often encountered differing views on the role of baptism in salvation. Many people assume baptism is the key to being saved, but through deep study and reflection, I’ve realized that biblical salvation is centered on faith in Jesus Christ’s finished work on the cross. The verses Matthew 28:19-20 and John 3:14-18 make it clear that baptism is an act of obedience after becoming a disciple, but the promise of eternal life is given to everyone who believes in Jesus—not those who have been baptized. Baptism symbolizes the death and resurrection of Christ and the believer’s new life in Him; it is a public declaration rather than the means of salvation. In my own experience, I found immense peace in understanding that salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned or added to by any ritual or work. Baptism is a beautiful step of faith following salvation but not a prerequisite for it. This distinction helped me avoid legalism and focus on growing my relationship with Jesus through faith and trust. If others struggle with the idea that baptism is necessary for salvation, I encourage them to look closely at the gospel’s core message—faith in Christ alone. When we fully rely on His sacrifice rather than our actions, we embrace true grace and the assurance of eternal life. Baptism remains important as a response to salvation, but it does not replace the essential belief in Jesus as Savior and Lord.
Baptism isn’t for salvation, but because of our salvation we should be baptized as Jesus was baptized.
