Hey everyone! So thrilled to share more about Page the Python, my current favorite crochet project as a new school librarian. When I started this role, my biggest goal was to make reading exciting and tangible for my 'littles' – those wonderful young students who are just discovering the magic of books. That's where Page comes in! Why a Crochet Reading Tracker? I've always loved how visual aids can make learning so much more engaging. Instead of just a chart or a sticker book, I wanted something that would grow physically with our reading achievements. An amigurumi python felt like the perfect choice – long and flexible, perfect for adding countless 'stripes'! Each stripe represents a story we've read together, making our progress literally measurable and visible. It's truly amazing to see the children's eyes light up when they realize Page is getting longer because of their reading efforts. This project has become a beloved mascot in our library, inspiring giggles and shouts of excitement every time a new book is finished. Getting Started with Your Own Reading Buddy If you're a fellow librarian, teacher, or just a parent looking for a creative way to encourage reading, I highly recommend a project like this! You don't have to be a crochet expert to start. For Page, I began with a simple head shape, which really doesn't look like much at first! But the magic is in the ongoing additions. You could use basic single crochet stitches in a continuous spiral for the body segments. The beauty is you can customize it completely. Choosing Your Stripes: Categories & Yarn Colors One of the most fun parts is deciding on the 'rules' for the stripes! For Page, I've assigned different yarn colors to specific reading categories. For example, a bright yellow stripe might mean we read a fantasy adventure, while a cool blue could be a non-fiction book about oceans. This not only adds beautiful visual variety to Page but also subtly introduces the kids to different genres and topics. It’s a fantastic way to encourage them to explore books they might not usually pick up. We even let the kids vote on the next category or color sometimes, giving them ownership over Page's growth. Beyond the Python: Other Amigurumi Ideas While Page the Python is a hit, you could adapt this idea to so many other amigurumi creatures! Imagine a dragon growing scales, a caterpillar adding body segments, or even a 'bookworm' getting longer with each chapter. The principle is the same: a tangible, growing representation of reading progress. It makes the abstract concept of reading goals much more concrete and rewarding for young learners. The tactile nature of the crochet also adds a sensory element that many children appreciate. Tips for Fellow School Librarians Integrating crafts like this into your library program can really boost engagement. It creates a shared experience and something tangible for students to rally around. Don't be afraid to involve the students in the process – maybe they pick the next yarn color, or suggest a new category. It turns the library into a vibrant, interactive space where reading is a visible adventure. This whole crochet project has truly transformed how my 'littles' view reading, turning it into a collaborative journey with our charming Page the Python!
