i’m loving the battery life and new sleep features on the SE 3
i just wish apple watch SE models came in different colors. currently the two colors options you have are either black or starlight.
it’s nice to be able to track my steps during the day AND my sleep at night all in 24 hours within one charge!!!
i upgraded from the apple watch SE 2 so physicality wise it looks EXACTLY the same as the previous model. what’s different internally is going to be the battery life, sleep apnea notifications, and an option for “always on” display

It’s a super valid question, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors or rely on your watch for quick glances in various lighting conditions.
So, let's dive into the display of the Apple Watch SE 3, which I gave a solid 9/10 in my initial review. For those wondering about the technical specs like 'screen brightness nits,' I did some digging. The Apple Watch SE 3, like its predecessors in the SE line, boasts a bright Retina display capable of reaching up to 1000 nits of brightness. What does 'nits' mean in real terms? Essentially, it's a measure of how bright a screen can get. A higher nit count means better visibility, especially when you're out in direct sunlight. This is a crucial detail for anyone worried about legibility in bright conditions.
From my personal experience wearing my Apple Watch SE 3 with its lovely starlight band, this 1000-nit brightness level is more than ample for most daily scenarios. Whether I'm checking notifications during a sunny walk or quickly glancing at my fitness rings indoors, the screen is always clear and easy to read. I've never found myself squinting or struggling to see information, which is a massive plus for usability. Even under harsh midday sun, the display remains surprisingly clear, making it a reliable companion for outdoor activities.
The inclusion of the 'always-on display' feature, which I touched upon earlier, also benefits greatly from this brightness. While the always-on mode typically dims the screen to conserve battery, having that 1000-nit peak brightness means that when you raise your wrist, the full brilliance immediately kicks in, making everything instantly visible. This is a huge improvement for someone like me who values quick, effortless information access throughout the day, especially when I'm tracking my steps or checking heart rate without having to fully wake the watch.
Of course, screen brightness isn't just about visibility; it also plays a role in battery life. The SE 3’s impressive 24-hour battery life, which I absolutely adore for its ability to track both my daytime activity and my sleep seamlessly, is carefully managed alongside the display settings. You can, of course, adjust the brightness levels manually if you want to extend your charge even further, but honestly, I've found the automatic brightness settings to be very efficient. It intelligently adjusts based on ambient light, giving you the best of both worlds: great visibility and extended usage, which is perfect for my busy schedule.
Beyond just brightness, the SE 3's display is crisp and vibrant, making the watch faces – like the butterfly one I often use – look fantastic. The Ion-X glass front provides decent durability for everyday bumps, which is reassuring. So, while the SE 3 might not have every advanced sensor of the higher-end models, its display performance, particularly its brightness, is definitely a highlight that contributes to its overall value and my five-star (or 9/10!) feeling about it. It’s a well-rounded device that balances performance with practicality.
In summary, if you're concerned about whether the Apple Watch SE 3 display is bright enough, rest assured that 1000 nits provides excellent readability in almost all conditions. It complements the stellar 24-hour battery life and practical sleep features beautifully, making it a fantastic daily companion that truly enhances my tech review experience.
