6 Book Series to Try for Language Learning

Here are some language book series that you can find in multiple languages. While I havent used them for every language, I have used atleast a couple from each series.

If you’re US based, most booksellers will have books from these brands in stock.

1. McGraw Hill (Beginner-Intermediate)

They are known more for their study guides, but they also publish great grammar and vocabulary books.

They have books in French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Italian, German, Portuguese, Arabic and more.

I recommend their “Practice Makes Perfect” series.

2. Assimil (Beginner-Advanced)

They have complete book courses with audio to deepen your understanding of the basics. Their book only content is aimed at A1-A2 levels, but you can go up to C2 with their“perfectionnement” and “superpack” courses.

These are pricier but are structured pathways to learning with 30-40 minutes of your time a day.

They feature more than 30 languages including harder to find ones like Khmer, Bulgarian, and Catalan.

3. Lonely Planet Phrasebooks (Intermediate)

These are just phrasebooks but are the best of their kind that I’ve found so far. They’re inexpensive at 6-10 dollars each and have a ton of languages.

4. Colloquial Language by Routledge (Intermediate)

They have very good coverage with the languages they offer and the books are great mini courses with lots of exercises. Not sure how updated the actual “colloquial” part is, but if you are trying to transition to your B levels I think there are perfect. I can usually find them at second hand bookshops too - so chances are you can find them for a good deal.

5. 10 Minutes a Day Series (Total Beginner)

You can absolutely find all this info for free online but if you don’t have time to poke around the internet - these are a good alternative for busy people. They “only” have 20 languages, and are very basic info. But if you’re coming from zero, you can get ready for A1 materials this way.

Just a note: For the languages that have different alphabets, these books don’t teach you their writing systems. (at least the ones I have)

6. Monolingual Books (Intermediate-Advanced)

This isn’t a series, but more something you can look for. Most countries have exams for foreigners to be recognized as fluent in their language. No need to go out and take a bunch of tests but the prep books for these exams tend to be quite good. Some examples are: JLPT for Japanese, DELE for Spanish, HSK for Mandarin, and TOEFL for English.

I read this series last year & I loved it!! I don’t see this series being talked about a lot, & I feel like it’s one that definitely deserves more attention and love :)) Rebecca Yarros is just such a great romance writer and storyteller. Most of the books I’ve read of hers I’ve really loved

Here’s another book I use to help me with Spanish. This one is super helpful because it did make me realize, most words are easy to translate to Spanish. There are still rules but this opened my mind so much more. She explains a lot and it’s very easy to take notes with the way the book is also
