6 Book Series to Try for Language Learning

Here are some language book series that you can find in multiple languages. While I havent used them for every language, I have used atleast a couple from each series.

If you’re US based, most booksellers will have books from these brands in stock.

1. McGraw Hill (Beginner-Intermediate)

They are known more for their study guides, but they also publish great grammar and vocabulary books.

They have books in French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Italian, German, Portuguese, Arabic and more.

I recommend their “Practice Makes Perfect” series.

2. Assimil (Beginner-Advanced)

They have complete book courses with audio to deepen your understanding of the basics. Their book only content is aimed at A1-A2 levels, but you can go up to C2 with their“perfectionnement” and “superpack” courses.

These are pricier but are structured pathways to learning with 30-40 minutes of your time a day.

They feature more than 30 languages including harder to find ones like Khmer, Bulgarian, and Catalan.

3. Lonely Planet Phrasebooks (Intermediate)

These are just phrasebooks but are the best of their kind that I’ve found so far. They’re inexpensive at 6-10 dollars each and have a ton of languages.

4. Colloquial Language by Routledge (Intermediate)

They have very good coverage with the languages they offer and the books are great mini courses with lots of exercises. Not sure how updated the actual “colloquial” part is, but if you are trying to transition to your B levels I think there are perfect. I can usually find them at second hand bookshops too - so chances are you can find them for a good deal.

5. 10 Minutes a Day Series (Total Beginner)

You can absolutely find all this info for free online but if you don’t have time to poke around the internet - these are a good alternative for busy people. They “only” have 20 languages, and are very basic info. But if you’re coming from zero, you can get ready for A1 materials this way.

Just a note: For the languages that have different alphabets, these books don’t teach you their writing systems. (at least the ones I have)

6. Monolingual Books (Intermediate-Advanced)

This isn’t a series, but more something you can look for. Most countries have exams for foreigners to be recognized as fluent in their language. No need to go out and take a bunch of tests but the prep books for these exams tend to be quite good. Some examples are: JLPT for Japanese, DELE for Spanish, HSK for Mandarin, and TOEFL for English.

... Read moreChoosing the right language learning book series can honestly feel overwhelming with so many options out there! From my own journey, I've found that the best approach isn't just picking a popular name, but understanding what each series offers and how it aligns with your personal learning style and goals. Let me share some insights on how to navigate these choices and make the most of your selected books. How to Pick Your Perfect Language Learning Partner When you're looking at series like McGraw Hill's “Practice Makes Perfect,” Assimil, or Routledge’s “Colloquial” line, it's helpful to consider a few things: Your Current Level & Goals: Are you a total beginner? The “10 Minutes a Day Series” can be a fantastic, low-pressure start, especially for those initial steps. For a more structured path from beginner to advanced, Assimil is a powerhouse, offering courses that can take you all the way to C2 fluency, like their "Assimil Perfectionnement Allemand Deutsch" for intermediate learners. If you're transitioning to intermediate levels, the extensive exercises in the “Colloquial” series (like “Colloquial Icelandic”) are ideal. Learning Style Preference: Do you thrive with lots of grammar explanations and varied exercises? Then "Practice Makes Perfect" (especially for specific skills like their French vocabulary books) or “Colloquial” might be your best bet. If you prefer an immersive approach with audio and dialogue, Assimil's integrated courses are renowned. For quick, practical vocabulary for travel, a "Lonely Planet Turkish Phrasebook & Dictionary" is incredibly useful, focusing on phrases related to travel, dining, and everyday interactions. Language Specifics: Some languages, like Japanese, have complex writing systems. While the “10 Minutes a Day” series might not teach you new alphabets, dedicated books or resources like a "Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 exam prep book" are crucial for mastering writing and advanced grammar. When learning a language like Portuguese, look for books that include practical "Portuguese exercises" and diverse vocabulary, perhaps even for specific topics like "travel, jewelry, crafts, and tiles" if that aligns with your interests. Maximizing Your Study Sessions with These Books Once you’ve chosen your series, consistency is truly your secret weapon. Even if you only have “10 Minutes a Day,” make those minutes count! Don't just passively read; engage with the material. Do the exercises! Whether it's the grammar drills in “Practice Makes Perfect” or the fill-in-the-blanks in a “Colloquial” book, active recall solidifies your learning. Utilize audio component: Assimil is famous for its audio. Listen, repeat, and try to mimic native speakers. This is vital for pronunciation and listening comprehension. Don't be afraid to write: Copy new vocabulary, translate sentences, or even write short paragraphs based on the book's content. Many of these books have clear "illustrations" that can aid memory and make the learning process more engaging. Supplement your learning: No single book can do it all. Use your phrasebook for travel scenarios, apps for quick vocabulary reviews, and online resources for cultural context. I personally love looking up songs or short stories in my target language once I hit an intermediate level. It makes the learning feel less like work and more like exploring a new world. Finding the right book series is a huge step, but the real magic happens when you consistently engage with it. Happy language learning!
