60+ to 80+ on My Essays: My Personal Guide 📚✨

1️⃣ Time Management is Key

Good essays require time! You can't expect to rush and get top marks. For a 3000-word essay, I usually give myself 4-5 days (sometimes 6 days depending on life). This time allows me to dive into research, build my outline, and—most importantly—proofread! Always plan ahead and don’t try to cram at the last minute.

2️⃣ Understand the Assessment Criteria

Before diving into research or writing, I carefully review the rubric to understand exactly what the professor expects, especially the requirements for an H1 (A+) grade. Look for things like evidence of understanding, which concepts need to be analyzed, and if any frameworks are required. For citations: For a 1500-word essay, I usually include 10-12 sources, and for 3000 words, I aim for 24+ sources—almost up to 30 references!

3️⃣ Research Like a Pro

I start my process with deep research. Day one is all about reading, gathering sources, and figuring out my main argument. I plan the structure of my essay and make sure I understand the critical points I need to analyze. I don’t jump into writing until I have a clear framework—trust me, trying to write without a solid plan is inefficient and ends up wasting time.

4️⃣ Writing the Essay

I tend to write slowly because I like to get my structure and wording perfect from the start. This method works for me, as I dislike rewriting multiple drafts. For some, drafting quickly and revising later might be better, but I prefer to carefully craft each sentence as I go. This saves me from major revisions later on.

I hope these tips help you with your essay writing journey! It’s all about managing time, understanding the assessment, doing solid research, and writing with clarity and structure. Let’s all aim for that H1 this semester! 💪🏼📖

Feel free to share your own tips or ask any questions—let’s keep growing together! 🌟

2025/2/14 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you've dedicated hours to writing your essay, following all the steps to research and structure your points. But before you hit submit, have you ever wished you could get an early ‘grade my essay’ review to see where you truly stand? I know I have! Over time, I’ve developed my own pre-submission checklist, almost like an internal grading rubric, that helps me ensure my essays are truly ‘80%+’ material. It's all about understanding what graders are looking for and becoming your own harshest, yet most effective, critic. From my personal experience and the invaluable feedback I've received, I've identified a few key areas that consistently distinguish an ‘outstanding work’ from an average one. For instance, I once received feedback praising a 'marvelous essay' for its 'rich and nuanced understanding' and 'capacity to reflect upon representational complexities.' This taught me that simply presenting information isn't enough; you need to demonstrate deep engagement and thoughtful interpretation of your chosen subject matter. Another time, I was thrilled to get a 'High H1' because my essay showed 'a very thoughtful and articulate exploration of some of the complexities of this topic' and a 'sophisticated approach to both primary and secondary source research.' This wasn't just about collecting sources, but about how I critically analyzed and synthesized them to build a 'logical and convincing' argument. The graders want to see you engaging profoundly with 'core concepts,' pushing beyond surface-level understanding. Here’s how I approach my final review to make sure my work meets these high standards – essentially, how I 'grade my essay' before anyone else does: Clarity, Conciseness, and Structure Check: Take a step back. Is your argument 'clear, concise, effectively edited and well-structured'? I literally read my essay aloud. This helps me catch awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, and ensures the flow is smooth and logical. Each paragraph should have one clear main idea that contributes directly to your thesis. Does your introduction clearly present your argument, and does your conclusion effectively summarize and offer a final thought without introducing new information? Depth of Analysis & Nuance: Ask yourself: 'Am I just describing, or am I truly analyzing?' The feedback about 'nuanced interpretations' and reflecting on 'strengths and limitations' really stuck with me. Challenge yourself to explore the 'why' and 'how.' Have you considered counter-arguments or different perspectives? Are you demonstrating a 'strong understanding of key concepts' by applying them, not just defining them? Evidence-Based Argumentation: Your argument needs to be 'logical and convincing,' supported by 'a range of relevant academic sources.' Don't just drop quotes; integrate them seamlessly and explain how they support your point. Ensure you're not just summarizing your sources, but actively 'deconstructing and analysing' specific elements to provide 'complex and sophisticated insight' into your case studies. Does every piece of evidence directly support a claim? Critical Engagement: This is where you elevate your essay. Are you demonstrating 'critical engagement' with the material? Are you questioning, evaluating, and forming your own informed opinions based on the evidence? This shows your 'outstanding ability to conduct independent research' and think critically, which is highly valued within academia and beyond. It’s about making the material your own intellectually. Final Polish – The Details Matter: After all the heavy lifting, don't underestimate the power of a thorough proofread. Even the most brilliant insights can be marred by typos or grammatical errors. I often use online tools or ask a peer to quickly scan for mistakes. An essay that is 'effectively edited' speaks volumes about your attention to detail and professionalism. Remember, the 'structure and organisation of your argument' should flow clearly throughout, and that includes perfect grammar and spelling. By adopting this proactive approach to self-assessment, you’re not just writing an essay; you’re crafting a piece of 'outstanding work' that is ready to impress. It’s about taking control of your grade before it’s even assigned. Give these steps a try, and you might just find yourself consistently achieving those top marks!
