“Japanese Kanji are too hard 😩”

Don’t make the same mistakes I did 😭

i spent about a year memorizing like 2000 kanji, their readings and meanings. But even then I couldnt read a real book lol. It turns out remembering Kanji and being literate are two completely different things. So I think the best way instead is to just jump straight into vocabular and reading 🇯🇵

... Read moreWhen I first started learning Japanese kanji, I thought that simply memorizing an extensive list of characters along with their readings and meanings was the key to fluency. However, after spending about a year studying roughly 2,000 kanji, I faced the frustrating reality that I still couldn’t comfortably read a genuine Japanese book. This experience revealed an important lesson: knowing kanji isn’t the same as being able to read Japanese naturally. One thing that really changed my approach was shifting focus from isolated kanji memorization to learning vocabulary and engaging in actual reading practice. Instead of trying to master each kanji as a separate entity, I started learning whole words that use those characters in context. This method made it far easier to recognize patterns and understand the flow of sentences. I found that many kanji are like building blocks, much like Legos, where a handful of radicals and components combine in predictable ways to form different words. By concentrating on common vocabulary, I could build intuition about how kanji function together. This approach aligns with real language use, helping you internalize meaning rather than just memorize shapes and pronunciations. Also, using tools and resources that focus on vocabulary acquisition, such as language apps or graded readers, helped me see immediate progress. For example, apps like Penglo recommend learning practical words first to be able to use Japanese right away instead of overwhelming yourself with kanji list drills. Moreover, practicing with conversational examples and dialogues improved my understanding of grammar and context, which is just as crucial as kanji knowledge. Incorporating stories and real-life reading materials boosted my confidence significantly. In summary, don’t get discouraged if kanji memorization feels tough or unproductive at first. Jumping straight into vocabulary and reading practice not only makes learning more enjoyable but also bridges the gap between knowing kanji and truly being literate in Japanese. It’s a gradual process, but focusing on useful words and context will get you reading real Japanese far faster.
