Apparently all of New York is just NYC 🫠. #wny #rochesterny #westernny #upstateny #trending
Okay, so let's clear up the biggest misconception about living in New York: it's not all about the Big Apple! I'm constantly surprised by how many people think if you're in New York, you're practically walking distance from Times Square. As someone who grew up in the Catskills and has called Rochester, NY, home for over a decade, I can tell you, Western New York is a whole different world. And no, I don't run into celebrities walking through Central Park – I'm more likely to encounter a snowplow during our famous winters! What exactly is considered Western NY? Generally, it encompasses the westernmost counties of the state, including Erie (where Buffalo is), Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Monroe (that's my county, home to Rochester!). We're talking about a region that borders Pennsylvania and is often closer to Canada than it is to Manhattan. It's a place of stunning natural beauty, from the Great Lakes to the Finger Lakes region, and it has a unique culture distinct from the hustle and bustle downstate. People often ask about Rochester vs. Buffalo, and it's a friendly rivalry! Both are major cities in Western NY, each with its own charm. Buffalo, often called the 'City of Good Neighbors,' is famous for its wings, vibrant sports scene (Go Bills!), and impressive architecture. Rochester, on the other hand, is known as the 'Flower City' and the 'World's Image Center,' thanks to Kodak and Xerox. We have a thriving arts scene, beautiful parks (like Highland Park, famous for its lilacs), and a strong focus on education and innovation with institutions like the University of Rochester. While Buffalo has its iconic waterfront, Rochester boasts the Genesee River Gorge and waterfall right downtown – a hidden gem! Our cultural institutions, like the George Eastman Museum, are world-class. Living here means experiencing all four seasons in their full glory, especially winter. That's where the 'snowplow' comment comes in! We get significant snowfall, but we also have fantastic opportunities for winter sports. Summers are beautiful, with plenty of festivals and outdoor activities. It's a community-focused lifestyle, where people are genuinely friendly and the pace is a bit slower than NYC. So, next time you hear 'New York,' remember there's a vast, diverse, and vibrant region beyond the city lights. Western NY isn't just a place on a map; it's a lifestyle, rich in history, natural beauty, and a strong sense of local pride. And no, it's definitely not Westchester!
