Breaking It down for clients
Just for humor guys had so much fun making this reel follow me on all social platforms @ styledbydeee #stylistsupportingstylist #salonhumor #clientsbelike #stylistsoftiktok
As a stylist, I’m constantly learning new techniques, but honestly, the most challenging (and sometimes funniest!) part of the job is often understanding client needs and communicating effectively. We’ve all been there: you’ve poured your heart and soul into a client’s transformation, you mention the total, let’s say, 'It's $600,' and then comes the classic line, 'Can you break that down?' It's a universal salon moment that always brings a smile, or perhaps a slight inner cringe, to my face! Beyond the humor, this scenario highlights a crucial aspect of our work: really understanding what our clients want and how to articulate the value of our services. It’s not just about what they say they want, but also the unspoken mood or impression they’re trying to achieve. Active listening, asking open-ended questions, and even using visual aids like mood boards are critical to truly grasping their vision. I've found that when clients feel truly heard, the rest of the conversation, even about pricing, becomes much smoother. When a client asks, 'How much do I owe you?' and then follows up with 'Can you break that down?', it’s an opportunity. It’s a chance to transparently explain the intricacies of the service, the quality of products used, the time invested, and the skill involved. For example, I might explain how a complex colour correction involves multiple steps, specialized products, and hours of meticulous work, justifying why 'It's $600' reflects that expertise. Adapting my communication style – whether simplifying technical terms or offering clear choices – helps meet their needs and builds trust. This is essentially communicating the product's *value*, which, as we know, is a key aspect of marketing our skills. Then there are the unexpected client requests! Every stylist has a story. From asking for a radical change just days before a big event to requesting a style that physically defies their hair type, these moments keep us on our toes. My approach has always been to maintain professionalism while allowing for a little internal chuckle. Learning to adapt communication to gently guide clients towards realistic and beautiful outcomes is an art. It's about finding that sweet spot between fulfilling their desires and ensuring they leave happy and with healthy hair. It’s these daily interactions, full of humor and humanity, that make the salon floor such an incredible place to work. Embracing these moments, while continuously refining our communication, is what truly builds lasting client relationships.
