Storytime: being a woman in public is scary ‼️

for education awareness‼️💖 STORYTIME: one day after work I went to grab some groceries for the week. 20 minutes into shopping I noticed a man with a baseball cap that sat low on his head at the end of the aisle staring at the nutritional facts on some tortillas. I noticed he had nothing in his cart, but didn’t think much about it as I carried on with shopping. When I went to the self check out 15 minutes later, I happened to glance over my shoulder to the aisle where the man with the hat was and he was STILL standing there looking at the same tortillas with nothing in his cart. My palms began to sweat and my stomach turned. Although my car was parked three rows over I had a heavy cart and didn’t feel comfortable leaving the store by myself. I thought about asking an associate to escort me out when my boyfriend called me. I told him about how i noticed the man and how I felt nervous. He told me to wait by customer service and was 10 mins away to help escort me. While I sat and waited I noticed the man glance up from the aisle just enough to see past his hat bill but stood in the exact same spot for over 45 mins. It didn’t feel right. Then I noticed a tall larger build man walk in and stare me down as he walked past me and through the store, he didn’t break eye contact. He did a lap around the self check out and approached me and mumbled something under his breath that I didn’t catch. Thankfully my boyfriend arrived and helped me get home safely.

Being a woman can be so scary and vulnerable especially in public. Please stay aware of your surroundings and protect yourself and your children. Trust your gut. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help or assistance when in public 💖

... Read moreThat story sent shivers down my spine! It's unfortunately a reality many of us women face – that unsettling feeling, those 'heebie jeebies' moments when you just know something isn't right. It really highlights how crucial it is to stay aware of our surroundings and always prioritize our safety. Beyond grocery stores, there are so many other everyday situations where an extra layer of caution can make all the difference. I’ve definitely had my share of uneasy feelings in different public spaces, and I wanted to share some of my personal strategies to stay safe. Let’s talk about dark parking lots. These are a major source of anxiety for me, especially at night. My go-to strategy is always to park as close to the store entrance as possible, and definitely under a bright light. Before I even step out of the building, I do a quick scan of the lot. When I walk to my car, my keys are already in my hand, ready to unlock the door, and I try to walk with purpose. I also make it a habit to quickly glance under and around my car before getting in. If I'm feeling particularly vulnerable, I'll even pretend to be on the phone, talking loudly, just to make sure anyone lurking knows I'm not isolated. Another scenario that often makes me nervous is pumping gas alone. I try to pick well-lit, busy gas stations, especially if it’s getting dark. The cardinal rule for me is to always keep my car doors locked while I’m out of the vehicle. I avoid getting distracted by my phone and instead, I pay close attention to everyone around me. If someone approaches and I feel uncomfortable, I maintain a polite but firm distance and don't hesitate to make eye contact to show I’m aware of their presence. It’s always better to be overly cautious than to regret it. The feeling of noticing someone following you can be absolutely terrifying, whether you’re walking, driving, or like in the story, just doing your shopping. If I suspect I’m being followed, I try to confirm it subtly. I might make a few unexpected turns if I’m driving, or change aisles/direction if I’m walking. If they continue to follow, I immediately head to a very public place – a busy store, a police station, or even a fire station. And I never hesitate to call a friend or family member, or even 911 if I feel my safety is truly compromised. Trusting that gut instinct is paramount. What about that unexpected knock at the front door when home alone? This can be so startling. My personal rule is simple: if I’m not expecting anyone, I don’t open the door. I use my peephole or a doorbell camera if I have one to see who it is. If I can't identify them and they seem suspicious, I'll call a neighbor or even the non-emergency police line. Sometimes, just calling out “Who is it?” from behind the closed door is enough to deter anyone with bad intentions. And let's not forget rest stop bathrooms. These can feel incredibly isolated and vulnerable, especially during off-hours. If possible, I try to travel with someone and have them wait nearby. If I absolutely have to go alone, I make sure someone knows my location, and I’m quick. I always check the stalls thoroughly before entering and stay alert the entire time. Your personal safety is always worth the extra effort. Remember, ladies, your instinct is your most powerful tool. Trust your gut feelings, no matter how irrational they might seem. Stay aware, carry a personal safety alarm if it makes you feel safer, and never be afraid to ask for help or make noise if you feel threatened. We need to empower ourselves and each other to be safe.
