Telepathic Autistic People part 4
What does a neurodiversity affirming speech language pathologist think of The Telepathy Tapes?
This podcast series was extremely interesting and captivating. The way it’s designed really convinces its listener that the possibility of non-speaking autistic people using telepathic communication is likely. Personally, I believe this could be true, but the evidence is not there.

Since I shared my initial thoughts on 'The Telepathy Tapes,' I’ve been thinking even more deeply about the concept of telepathic speaking, especially when it comes to non-speaking autistic individuals. It's such a fascinating and, frankly, hopeful idea, isn't it? The thought that there might be a rich, complex communication happening beyond what we typically perceive is truly captivating. But as someone who works with communication every day, my mind immediately jumps to the science – or the lack thereof. It’s challenging to scientifically prove something as elusive as telepathy. I remember hearing discussions about how difficult it is to design trials without 'concerning variables' that could influence results. And let's be honest, humans aren't always the best at objectively 'recording events,' especially when we have our own hopes or biases about what we're witnessing. This is where the story of Ky Dickens and her journey, including her spiritual search, really resonates. It highlights how deeply personal and subjective these experiences can be, making concrete, replicable evidence incredibly hard to pin down. For me, a more grounded, yet still profound, explanation often comes to mind: what if non-speaking people are just incredibly attuned to 'picking up on subtle cues'? Think about it – if you can't rely on spoken words, your other senses and observational skills might develop to an extraordinary degree. You might notice shifts in body language, facial expressions, tone (even non-verbal ones), energy in a room, or even minute changes in breathing patterns that most verbal communicators simply overlook. This isn't telepathy in the sci-fi sense, but it’s a form of highly sophisticated, intuitive communication that can feel almost magical. It’s a testament to the incredible adaptability of the human mind. Yet, I'd be lying if I said there isn't a part of me, a spiritual side, that genuinely believes in the 'interconnectedness of people' and the immense 'power of the brain.' There’s something deeply compelling about the idea that we’re all linked on a level we don't fully understand. I even have this personal theory that maybe, just maybe, humanity will 'evolve to be able to communicate telepathically' someday. It sounds like something out of a futuristic novel, but when you consider how far human communication has come, it doesn't seem entirely impossible. I'll admit, after pondering all this, I've caught myself trying to mentally send messages to my cat sometimes – just to see! (Spoiler: still waiting for a clear response!) Ultimately, whether it's telepathy or hyper-attunement to subtle cues, this whole discussion has reshaped how I think about communication. It reminds me to always look deeper, listen with more than just my ears, and appreciate the vast, diverse ways humans can connect. It encourages me to foster environments where all forms of communication are valued and explored, pushing past our preconceived notions of what "speaking" truly means.
