Working a job with DID

Working 40 hours a week can drain so much out of a person. Especially when that person is dealing with mental health struggles that make tasks of daily living difficult to maintain. People like us who are diagnosed with DID aren't just dealing with DID and the symptoms of that condition (though that's hard enough on its own).

DID comes along with a lot of co-morbid conditions like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and for us personally, OCD and ADHD. Not to mention all the physical chronic illnesses that can be co-morbid with it as well.

All of this happens on a spectrum of functionality. Some of us are able to hold high stress positions and have highly successful careers. While others of us use all the strength we have to get up out of bed and take a shower for the first time that week. A lot of us fall somewhere in the middle. I'm able to hold a full time job, but struggle to shower more than once or twice a week. Not because I'm gross, but because I don't have the emotional, mental, or physical energy to do it all.

To be clear, one life style does not make you any more or less valuable than another. You have inherent value just by being you. I truly and wholeheartedly believe that. You used everything you had to survive. And the truth is that you're still surviving, and that takes a lot out of a person. You're doing your best, give yourself grace.

... Read moreFor individuals living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), balancing a job can be particularly challenging due to the array of mental health issues that often coexist, such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD, and ADHD. These conditions can significantly affect daily functioning, making regular tasks feel overwhelming. It's important to recognize that each person's experience with DID can vary greatly, from thriving in high-pressure roles to struggling with basic self-care. Understanding this spectrum helps foster a narrative of acceptance and compassion. There are strategies that may assist in managing work-life balance amidst these challenges. For instance, utilizing supportive therapy, establishing a flexible work environment, and advocating for mental health resources can make a substantial difference. Connecting with understanding colleagues and peers who share similar experiences can provide essential support and reduce feelings of isolation. The discussion surrounding mental health, especially regarding conditions like DID, is crucial for creating an inclusive work environment. Education and awareness can help break down stigmas, allowing for greater empathy and understanding from coworkers and employers alike. Remember, navigating your path is a testament to your resilience. You have worth beyond your job performance, and seeking balance is not just an act of survival but an affirmation of your value as an individual.
