Internship log day 4

2024/12/18 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so that little 'bug fixed' moment? Pure bliss! But getting there, especially during an internship, can feel like climbing Mount Everest backwards. Since you're here looking for 'code help me debug my code,' let me share some of my personal strategies and lessons learned from recent struggles, including that pesky API error I just conquered. First off, when a bug hits, my initial reaction used to be panic. Now, I try to take a deep breath and start with a systematic approach. The very first step is always reproducing the bug. Can you make it happen consistently? What are the exact steps? This helps you narrow down the scope. For my recent API issue, the console kept screaming 'HTTP/1.1 405 METHOD NOT ALLOWED' when I was trying to delete a person by ID. This immediately tells me the server isn't happy with how I'm trying to interact with that endpoint. My first thought was, 'Did I use the wrong HTTP method? Should it be POST instead of DELETE?' This is where looking at the API documentation becomes crucial. If that doesn't clarify it, I resort to tools. The OCR mentioned curl, and honestly, it's a lifesaver for testing API endpoints directly without the browser getting in the way. Next, understanding the error message is key. '405 Method Not Allowed' is pretty clear. But sometimes errors are more cryptic, like 'Thus, there's a mismatch when checking: person["id"] = var_name' from my recent problem. This pointed me to a data type issue – I was comparing a string (UUID) with what the code expected as an integer, or vice versa. Always double-check your data types, especially when dealing with IDs coming from different sources! And then, there's my secret debugging buddy: ChatGPT. Seriously, 'Come debug my code with me and ChatGPT' isn't just a catchy phrase, it's my reality! When I'm stuck, I literally 'copy and paste into' ChatGPT the error message, the relevant code snippet, and explain what I'm trying to achieve. I might even ask, 'Given this 405 error on a DELETE request, what are common reasons, and how can I verify them?' It often provides excellent starting points, like checking routing configurations or ensuring the correct return a JSON response format. It even helped me realize my return ("message": "Person with ID deleted"), 200 was actually syntactically incorrect in Python for a proper JSON response and needed jsonify or similar. Don't forget your logs! 'Verify Application Logs' is something I've learned to do religiously. Server-side logs often give you a much clearer picture of what's happening internally than client-side console errors. They might show you exactly where the request failed or why a certain condition wasn't met. Finally, take breaks. Staring at the same code for hours makes you blind to obvious mistakes. A walk, a coffee, or even just stepping away for 15 minutes can reset your brain. And celebrate those 'Bug fixed' moments! Every bug you squash is a lesson learned and makes you a better developer. Debugging is a skill, and it gets easier with practice. You've got this!
