Emergency Nursing Must Haves
If you’ve worked a single shift in the ER, you already know—it’s unpredictable, nonstop, and low-key feels like running a marathon in a trauma bay. Over the years, I’ve built a little survival kit of must-haves that get me through the madness. Here’s what I swear by:
⸻
1. Lip Gloss = Instant Life
There’s something about swiping on lip gloss in the middle of a 12-hour shift that just restores your soul. I keep one in every pocket because I need small joys when I haven’t peed in 7 hours.
⸻
2. Hydration + Caffeine = Nurse Fuel
I bring two bottles: one for water (with electrolytes when I remember) and one for caffeine. Usually an iced coffee or energy drink. The combo keeps me upright and semi-functional.
⸻
3. Protein + Snacks = Sanity
We don’t always get lunch breaks, so I load my bag with protein bars, trail mix, string cheese, and real food when I can. Pro tip: Bring more snacks than you think you’ll need—your future hangry self will thank you.
⸻
4. Comfy Shoes & Clothes
I rotate between Hokas and On Clouds, and I won’t shut up about them. Your feet take a beating out here. I also wear stretchy, moisture-wicking scrubs that feel like pajamas (but look cute enough for code situations).
⸻
5. My “ED Sweater”
It’s either a freezer or a furnace in the ER—no in-between. I always keep a cozy zip-up in my locker. I’ve had the same one since orientation and it’s borderline emotional support status now.
⸻
6. Laptop = My Lifeline
Whether it’s for charting, looking up protocols, or quickly referencing meds—I always have my laptop or tablet. It saves me so much time when I don’t want to fight for a workstation.
⸻
7. Scissors & Hemostats
Never enough of these. I keep mine clipped on me at all times. I use them constantly—cutting off clothes, opening med bags, clamping lines. If I lose them mid-shift, I panic.
⸻
These aren’t just “nice to haves.” These are what keep me grounded, energized, and able to focus on saving lives without losing mine in the process.
