Braid Out Results
Drop tips below! This is my first braid-out in over a year and while it’s not bad I think I can definitely do better. One thing I noticed while taking them down was that it was still a little damp so I definitely think that had something to do with it :(.
Also I love the way this #ouai @OUAI hair oil feels on my hair, it’s super lightweight but gets the job done. #naturalhairroutine #braidout
Achieving a beautiful BRAID-OUT on natural hair is truly an art form, and I totally get the feeling of hoping for perfection and getting something... almost there! My recent attempt, as you saw, taught me a lot, especially about making sure your hair is completely dry. If you're like me and aiming for those defined, bouncy curls, here are some extra tips I've gathered and plan to implement for my next braid out. First things first: Preparation is Key! Your braid out results depend heavily on what you do before you even start braiding. I always make sure my hair is freshly washed and deep conditioned. This ensures it's clean, soft, and moisturized, which is crucial for definition. Detangling thoroughly is also a must – a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush works wonders. I like to detangle in sections while my hair is still damp from the shower, with a generous amount of leave-in conditioner. Next up, Product Power! Choosing the right products can make or break your braid out. After my leave-in, I typically go in with a styling cream or a foam for hold and definition. This is where a good hair oil, like the OUAI hair oil I mentioned, comes into play. I found it really helped seal in moisture without weighing my hair down. A lightweight oil is essential to prevent greasy-looking results while adding that beautiful shine. Now for the Braiding Technique. I've learned that consistency in your braiding is super important. Section your hair neatly – the smaller the sections, the more defined your curls will be. For a classic braid out, I usually do about 8-12 braids, but you can adjust based on your desired curl size. Make sure your braids are firm but not too tight to avoid tension on your scalp. I personally prefer three-strand braids for my braid out, but two-strand twists or even flat twists work great too! The most crucial step, and something I definitely learned the hard way recently, is Drying Time! Your hair must be 100% dry before unraveling your braids. If your hair is even slightly damp, you'll end up with frizz and less defined curls, just like I did! You can air dry overnight, which is my preferred method, or use a hooded dryer or diffuser on a low-heat setting for a few hours. Patience is really a virtue here. I like to gently feel around my braids to ensure there’s no dampness hiding in the middle. When it's time for the big reveal, Unraveling Your Braids should be done gently. Before you start, apply a small amount of that wonderful OUAI hair oil (or any lightweight oil you prefer) to your fingertips. This helps reduce frizz as you take down each braid. Gently separate each braid, then carefully separate the resulting curls into smaller pieces for more volume. Don't over-separate if you want to maintain definition throughout the week. Finally, Maintaining Your Braid Out. To make your beautiful braid out last, I recommend sleeping with a satin bonnet or pillowcase. This protects your curls from friction and keeps them defined. If you need to refresh, a light mist of water mixed with a leave-in conditioner can help revive your curls without making them frizzy. I hope these extra tips help you on your natural hair journey to achieve stunning braid out results! It's all about trial and error, and finding what works best for your unique hair texture.
